cave symbol 1 (feb journal)

I blogged about some I made rubbings of which this piece is based on,
still using tyvek I painted this then hand stitched with embroidery threads the symbol, then I cut away some of the tyvek before applying heat, if you want to see it grow from the start then click the last photo first and count down,

when looking in Gwen Hedley’s book and wondering about the base fabric, I was interested in making plastic fabrics, then I was looking through Creative Quilts by Sandra Meech and there is a bit in that about making a plastic and fabric sandwich, so that’s what I did, but the first one was too light,

so I had to use a darker fabric under the plastic, I put some silk fibres in the middle and then after heating it I gave it a wash with some gold paint, again if you want to see it grow from the start then click the last photo first and count down,

I joined the symbol to the base with machine stitching and that is where I am now, I can’t decide if it needs more machine stitching on the base so I am letting it sit until I decide…….what do you think?? all Constructive criticism welcome,

Nope, sorry can't help i can knit aran jumpers, fair isle's without pattrens but don't ask me anything concerning a needle and thread(except to sew a button on and then it will NEVER come off again)i'm so hopeless with a needle and thread that when i design a jumper, knitted it i give it to my mother-in-law to put together(hang my head in shame)

carol from reflecting on your work

I've the opposite problem Carol, I get to sew the pieces for my mother - not one of my favourite jobs but at least it gets done, if it was left to her....well we'd still be waiting at the last trump. I am intrigued with this technique IT but I guess I do enough damage with a hot iron on clothes, perhaps I'll miss out on it.

Thought I'd made a comment yesterday in response to a rather unsupportive one and they've both gone...I sometimes think iB is really Looking Glass World...

I'm not much of an expert when it comes to sewing matters IL but these look pretty good to me as they are. FC - could you get in touch about the missing comments please, the email is islandblogging@bbc.co.uk

I like #1 of the third row best. The pattern sort of fits in best with the background so you can imagine it on a cave wall. great stuff, IT.

Poor Carol, the eejits (fpu) you have to put up with! IT, I think the base definitely needs something to un-shine it as it does look a bit like bubblewrap (though that may be the flash) but the stitching would have to be quite different to the 'cave symbol' or it might just all run together with no differentiation.

Flying Cat from a knotty problem

Thanks for comments and thoughts, the shine is intentional as the cave wall had a shine infact a lot of the rock in the area has a silver glint too it but I was thinking maybe it is too much contrast, there is already 2 layers of stitching on the background hand stitching in running stitch and then straight machine stitching but I am thinking of going over with another layer of machine stitching, the bubble is intentional as the walls had/have a bubbly/knobbly texture, we'll see what the weekend brings,

Interesting. In the world of fabric/embroidery inspiration IT, did you see Diary of a Deckhand's posting on the boat painting episode? That paint-encrusted wall lends itself to all sorts of stitchery. I see what you mean about wet rock...

Fc thanks for the telling me about diary of a deckhand's blog as no I have not read any ib blogs yet this week or any others hope get a little time tonight,

FC I did just about get to see DDH's blog post (as I have a dial up connection I often have trouble with the number of photos and IE cuts out before they all open), I like the wall but will like it much better 10 or 20 years after they stop spraying it, when the layers are peeling back like some of the photos I have put on my photo blog, note to self must add DDH to my bloglines then they will download individual posts and IE won't cut out,
