The Pitmen Painters by Lee Hall

The 91Èȱ¬ last Sunday was a true story about a group of coalminers who attended an art class in their town of Ashington during the 1930’s and became exhibiting Artists, it is very interesting and is available to hear online until next Sunday, the 91Èȱ¬ webpage also has a slide show of some of the paintings and anyone in or visiting Northumberland can see some of the paintings at the Woodhorn Colliery Museum, I tried to find a link for the museum but couldn’t, the 91Èȱ¬ has a link to the webpage for as they are now known,

My father grew up in a south Wales mining village and my grandfather died due to related dieses so I always take interest in the mining industry particularly in Britain pre 1950, my father never ‘went down the mines’ the government sent him to London on a government apprenticeship scheme on leaving school because the mines could not offer work to all school leavers in 1928, the paintings are a piece of social history.

Annie B and I had the pleasure of seeing the play at the Live Theatre in Newcastle very recently as a friend of mine, Michael Hodgson, plays one of the leading roles. The play was written by Lee Hall who wrote Billy Elliot and Spoonface Steenberg. It was commissioned to relaunch the revamped theatre. It is an incredibly funny yet poignant piece. The cast helped to refine the three hours of material down to two and a half hours and Michael asked me back a second time to make suggestions for tightening up the final act. The play was seen by Nicholas Huytner who directed 'History Boys' and he is taking it to the National Theatre. I hope they keep the same cast. It is a great piece of work. Annie B was in tears when the banner came on at the end. There is a performance upcoming for NUM officials at Ashington very soon. The paintings were on show at the theatre. They are very simple depictions of colliery life.
