"Welcome to Colonsay"

Storm-tossed traveller! on your way
Pass not lonely Colonsay.
There you will a welcome find
None more heartfelt, true or kind.
Though the scene looks cold and grey,
Hearts are warm in Colonsay.

Roaming happy, light, and gay
'Mang the heather on the brae;
There you'll find in woe or weal
Highland hearts as true as steel;
And remember many a day,
The kind folks of Colonsay!

I have been very interested in my ancestry ever since I learned of the connection to Colonsay. I have found some interesting information and some unconfirmed info that my family goes directly back to the island. The confirmed info I have only goes back as far as the first McAfee to arrive in the U.S.A. Northern Ireland. My line is through a William McAfee who's decendents moved from Penn. to N. Carolina through S. Carolina and then Geogia. Names include: William McAfee, John Whitaker McAfee, James Ervin McAfee, Elijah C. McAfee, Wesley P. McAfee, Lewis E. McAfee and Wesley J. McAfee. My line eventually left Georgia and with a short stay in Illinois and the Chicago area made their way to California where I was born. I am no, through other events in the south again, Arkansas. I make movies with my kid brothers and we made a short film about the island and two brothers who try to reclaim it for the McAfee Clan. Its a comedy of course. I do really hope to visit the island soon or even own a vacation home. That would be nice!

My paternal grandmother was Lou Ella McAfee.

I hardly think that being interested in one's ancestory is evidence of boredom. I am young, hot, and not at all weirdy-beardy..that must be the women of the McNeill clan. Cheers.

Christina from Indiana

...I believe you Christina, I really do.

Alexander married Regina, a Bavarian. They had 10 children including Frances Henry McAfee in California (my gg grandfather). I'm interested in parents of Alexander. Randall from CA

Alexander H. McAfee from Born Pennsylvania June 1828, lived El Dorado Co. C

Thanks Christina and Jack for the amusement. I am likely to get to Colonsay before Indiana, maybe this Christmas from Islay, and will check out just how hirstute the McNeill females are. Perhaps to share a nostalgia free Islay dram with Jack at the pub.

My father, Winfield Russell McAfee Jr., was born in Wichita Falls, Texas. His father, Winfield Russell McAfee, Sr., was from ???,

John Patrick McAfee from Hendersonville, North Carolina

I'm a McGuffin myself, and have been trying like hell to trace my family back. I don't know any relatives from my dad's side, due to an argument his father had with the family too many years ago. My grandfather died when my dad was 11. All I can tell is that the family is mostly located near Pt. Pleasant, WV, and the name. I'm looking for any relatives of Ray E. McGuffin. He had a twin brother named Roy E., and they had an older sister named Nola McGuffin Furbee. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I've just found out the name Macphee has (in many parts of Scotland) quite Negative conatations e.g. Tinkers, Thieves and mad folk! Can anybody tell me more about this?

Hi Jack, MY Mc Neills are all from Colonsay so we could be long gone, lost cousins! We should never forget OUR ANCESTORS- you sound like a big grouch- should I say Hi when I come to Colonsay next year cousin of mine -perhaps? all my best Jack- say hello to the lovely Isle of Colonsay for me -FLORA xxx

Flora MacDonald from CANADA- born in Scotland

I married a McPhee and being a history geek, had to check out pedigree and ancestral stomping grounds. Lovely looking island, though scarily remote, wild looking and prone to freezing Atlantic on-shores? I'd say the harsh reality of living on Colonsay would be the reason hundreds of thousands of MacFie's are scattered worldwide. Same reason all my Jamiesons and Laurensons from the Shetlands ended up in Palmerston North, NZ. Could be a good money spinner for the Island getting all us Genealogy-nerds back for a Clanfest though?

Jada McPhee from Auckland, New Zealand

I just found the connection of our family name to the original clan. I'm looking forward to planning a trip to Colonsay. I have always loved Scottland and this just gives me the reason to visit.

ron mcafee from Barrie Ontario, Canada, I am interested in researching my ancestory, and what the McAfee name is all about since I am one... You mentioned you bought a clan map from Scotland. Do you know if there is a website this can be purchased? And are the McAfee chic's in Scotland as hot as they apparently are right here in my home state of Indiana? I too plan to visit Scotland and Ireland in fall 07 with my father... Any recommendations/must visit? my email: ron7833@yahoo.com

Colonsay sounds spectacular, I am glad to hear my family came from such a neat island. My Grandfather, William Donald McAfee was from San Francisco, and had a sister whose name began with an L . We understand she drowned at about 17 years old, though we have no other info on her. This would have been in the 19 teens, I think. Grandpas dad was disowned from his wealthy McAfee family for marrying a show girl,as the story goes, so we don't know much more about the San Francisco McAfees, also, I am missing my McAfee cousins, 2 boys and a girl, whose mom, Sandy was my moms half sister. They'd be in thier late thirties or fortys now. Anyone know anything about the San Francisco McAfees? Looking forward to knowing more about my family, I want to get past the most recent family members so I can go further back, most of our history is lost. Thanks! email me katyluby@mac.com

For Jacqueline Waldon: My ancestors - great, great something or others were from Scotland, then Northern Ireland then, North Carolina and migrated to Georgia (Walker Co.) I did find my ancestor, William M. McAfee, listed in the 1860 slave schedule. His son was Berry McAfee and lived in East Chickamauga. You didn't give any years so I'm not sure if there is a connection here...

My wife , Sheila , and I are planning a trip " back home " later this summer . Any thoughts from those who have " been there , done that " would be much appreciated . This branch of the Mahaffy family tree has lived in or near St.Louis for more than 100 years .

My grandfather wqas Robert McAfee, head of the teamsters in the years of .prohibition in San Francisco. He married Mildred, daughter of a dance hall "lady" - my grandmother. They had two children, a daughter who died by drowning in the S.F. bay at age 19 and my father, William Donald McAfee, born 4/18 /1908. He had a daughter Sandra with his first wife. Sandy died at 50 over 20 years ago, leaving a husband, Julian (sonny simmons) and 4 chioldren, Steven, Michael, Christopher, and Maria. My siser Karen and I were born to our dad's 2nd wife Velma Lucille Adams. We were always told that my dad's heritage is Scotish and that the name had been Irishized when his great grandfather had arrived in the U.S. We have lost track of our nephews and our neice and would dearly love to find them. We knew them to all live in the San Francisco bay area at the time of their Mom's death. Our Mcafee clan is all buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetary in Colma, Ca. Let me know if there are any connections to any of you or your ancestors. In many ways this has become a very small world.

I am looking for information regarding a descendent of mine, it's about the father of a Donald MaPhee born 1752 in Scotland. Donald married Sarah MacNeill and they immigranted to PEI from Colonsay on the Spencer 1806. I believe Donald's mother's name was Sarah [also] but do not know [for sure] his fathers name or date, place of birth in Scotland. I know the father died in Scotland prior to 1806. Can anyone fill in the blanks for me? My e-mail address is ripstevens@telus.net. thanks for any assistance you can give me.

My Grandfather, Duncan McNeill, emigrated to Canada from the Hebrides sometime after WW1. He was in the Merchant Marines I believe. I have inherited some photos of him. Is there any possibility of tracking him back home?

To Jack McNeil from Colonsay: I do not think that seeking information about one's own hertitage or trying to make contact with "fellow McAfee's" in the world makes me some sort of "weirdy beardy" (what the hell ever that means) or "rag 'o tag" (sounds like you just insulted my family). FYI-> I and my ancestors have worked our "IRISH/SCOTTISH" asses off in every conceivable job from dishwasher to lumberjack and I have worked my way up from the bottom to a lead engineer in a major firm here in the USA. I am proud to call myself a McAfee and the name itself means much too me. Therefore, I am neither rag o tag nor weirdy beardy since I show respect for those who have come before me. I am a hard working MAN who takes care of his family and is proud of his name and forebearers. Furthermore, I have come to expect and will accept nothing more than the respect I have earned from anyone including you! Rather than "taking the high road" by writing to me and sharing your experiences-> you have chosen to take the "low road" and suggest that any person who is interested in Colonsay Isle or seeking their heritage is some sort of weirdo. If people of a similar background cannot even correspond with a sense of respect, I have no wonder the world is in the shape it is. I feel sorry for you and wonder what did someone ever do to you to deserve this comment? As my grandfather used to say "shame on the man without reason and so much more on those without respect for others"....

Hi, I am looking for acestors that are from Colonsay. I am trying to find out more about my family and our history. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it.

Melissa McAfee from West Branch, MI USA

Hi All! I just found this site and thought I would drop a line! I am related to Travis McAfee who wrote in some time ago. We both descend from a James McAfee, Sr,(1705/13-1769) of old Tryon Co., North Carolina. We both descend from his eldest son William(1735-1805) who died in Burke Co., North Carolina. We also descend from William's eldest son James Ervin McAfee(1762-1847) who married Margaret Cole(1772-1862). He is descended from Rev. John Whitaker McAfee(1799-1870) who was an elder son of James Ervin, while I am descended from a younger son Thomas Virgil McAfee(1810-1896)(he was my 3rd great grandfather)His 4th daughter and 5th child was my 2nd great grandmother Elizabeth Sophronia McAfee(1836-1911)she married Alexander P. Church(1831-1916)Their 10th child (of 12) and 4th daughter (of 6) was my great grandmother Nancy Ann Church(1874-1952) who married Rev, Benjamin C, Prickett(1872-1922), their 4th child(of 6) and 3rd son (of 3) was my grandfather Robert R, Prickett(1908-1971)who married Roma Haseltine Denton(1908-1976), their eldest child was my mother who married William Ernest Alexander(1929-1998) I am their eldest child and son. We haven't been able to trace James McAfee Sr's line back to Colonsay but we suspect that this may be so. Recent infomation places him in Pennsylvania in the early to late 1720's. He may have emigrated from Ireland or may have come directly from Scotland. He had four children by his 1st wife who is believed to have been named Janet. His children were: William(1735-1805)(my line)last known wife was Keren Happuch Chandler(a widow) whom he married in 1801. James,Jr.(1737-1829) married the widow Mary McIntire Green(1735-1817) Robert(1740-1818) married Anne Green( daughter of Mary McIntire Green and Joseph Green) Janet(1742-1811)married Widsor Pipes(1740-1806) moved to Mississippi. Three are may descendants of the sons of James, McAfee Sr that I have corresponded with, however there are others that may have information that may help us to find out just where our ancestor james, Sr. was born and from where he emigrated from. WE would appreciate and assistance in thei matter.

William M.(Mark) Alexander from Decatur, DeKalb Co., Georgia USA

My family came through Murfreesboro, Tennessee and is from the linage or William the Conquerer. Any others fro Tennessee or William the Conquereer?

I've just become interested in my family name today. Obviously i'll have to be the most famous member of the clan, as i was born on the 27th May 1981, the day the clan was recognized and reactivated by lord lyon. Perhaps i will be remembered the world over, and through countless generations of clan members. I've always had a nagging itch to check out where my family coat of arms and tartan originated. Perhaps we could use it as a sign of divine power, and use it in our favour to dominate the world as a clan, and produce a non-conflict peacefull world. Regards William Edward Mcphee

Ms. Kimberly Brown; I have done some reseach on the McGuffin line. But, I have yet to find connection to Ireland. Joseph Edward McGuffin Brn. abt 1757 and his father William McGuffin brn abt 1720. Both men died in Kentucky. Any help you can provide I wouls surely appreciate. royhud@comcast.net

It is good to see such interest in heritage. Readers wishing to check possible Colonsay connections should check colonsay.org.uk and select the drop-down list under the "history". Go to "genealogy", then "resources" - there is a transcription of the Old Parish Register (from 1795), all gravestone inscriptions and all census returns 1841 - 1901 inclusive.

byrne@colonsay.org.uk from Colonsay

My mother was a McPhee. I hope to visit Colonsay in 2009. My sister in law has done some genealogy and knows more about it all than I do, but I would love to see this remote part of Scotland.

Rosemary Brand from Sydney Australia

My family has been traced to a Henry Guffey in the Baltimore, Maryland area in about 1730. Old land deeds and wills offer several spellings of the family name at the time eg. 'MaGuffie', 'MeGuffee', etc. We believe that our early immigrants could not read or write and other people recorded their actual name, McAfee, phonetically. Later the name was further anglicized when the 'Ma' was dropped. From Maryland my line moved to Rutherford County, North Carolina, then to Tennessee and Arkansas and further west. Does anyone have any further information about this connection to the MacAfee Clan?

Don Guffey from Denver, CO

I have been compiling my family tree now for some time. Although for many generations we lived in the Glasgow area (where I was raised), we originally came from Colonsay. Hoping to get there soon for a trip; it looks beautiful!

I had written a year ago while on the Island of Iona about the differences between Mc and Mac. What is the difference, if any ? Thank you. This summer I will be on Colonsay

Big shout out to the McAfee's! I went to Colonsay back in 1999 and found ... 0 McAfee's. But everyone that was there was a fine person. I was hiking around the island in some new boots that put a blister on my foot and a local gentleman stopped and gave me a lift back to the hotel. Then Duncan sat with me at the bar and regaled me with his tales of the shipping industry of which he had been a part for many years. He was a great gentleman. He asked me when I was "putting out" and when I said in the morning he replied, "I will bring you some crab for the ferry ride back to Oban." I thought it was drunk talk (though he was in better condition than I after a few pints). Well, sure enough, the next morning it was pouring and as I made my way to the ferry Duncan came walking down the dock in his yellow rain suit and handed me a bag for the trip. It contained 2 fully dressed crabs that were scrumptious! It was a dreamy trip. I felt wonderful that the island, even sans McAfee, was populated with kind and caring people. It will remain a fond memory of my worldly travels for the rest of my life. As for lineage, I have done little to trace our ancestors. My father's cousin sent me a book of some work he has done and if anyone cares to view it I will be glad to make copies and mail it. I might even get off my lazy duff and scan and email it ... provided the persuasion is proper. All the best- Larry

Larry McAfee from Twin Cities, USA

Would be interested in knowing if any McAfee out there can trace his lineage to Lieutenant James W. McAfee of Palmyra Indiana, pilot with my father's B-17 crew in W.W.II. If so, would like to share war correspondence. Have handwritten letter from Mrs. James W. McAfee and card from Ruby McAfee Shryock.
