Environmental Nuisance

The 91热爆 requires all staff, suppliers and contractors to take all reasonable steps to prevent nuisance from occurring.

Updated: 9 November 2022

Nuisance is something that causes an unwanted disturbance to someone's quality of life or something that can have a negative effect on their health. Severe or prolonged nuisance can, in turn, result in considerable stress. For example loud noise in residential areas at night or bright light shining into people's bedroom windows can disrupt people's sleep.

91热爆 activities that are not properly managed may cause a nuisance to neighbours who may complain to the Local Authority. The Local Authority have the power to serve an abatement notice, issue a fixed penalty fine, or take further legal action against the 91热爆, resulting in large fines or even imprisonment. Neighbours may also take private legal action against the 91热爆 or pursue a civil claim for compensation. The 91热爆 requires all staff, suppliers and contractors to take all reasonable steps to prevent nuisance from occurring.

These Environmental Nuisance guidelines establish minimum operating standards that must be applied at all sites and the legal issues you must be aware of. If you have any queries relating to this Standard then you should contact the Safety Advice Line.

What Can Go Wrong?

  • General nuisance impact on neighbours:  Nuisance caused by, noise, smoke, fumes, gases, dust, steam, smell, effluvia, the keeping of animals, deposits and accumulations of refuse and/or other material, and other escapes from premises that are "prejudicial to health or a nuisance".
  • Nuisance from noise and vibration: Noise can arise from plant, equipment, traffic, events, special effects, groups of people, construction and demolition works. Vibration is a shaking motion which is transferred through the ground or buildings which can be felt.
  • Nuisance from odour: Odour can disrupt people's lives because strong smells can be unpleasant. Odour can arise from waste storage areas, catering facilities, power plants, chimneys, and special effects.
  • Nuisance from steam: Steam can be emitted from power plant or special effects and can disrupt people's lives by nature of its visual impact and if it cools and condenses into water on neighbouring objects, such as windows.

Legal/91热爆 Requirements

  • There are no specific legal requirements to draw to your attention; you must still apply the control measures that are relevant to your activity.

Control Measures

Preventing Nuisance

  • Inform neighbours and others of activities in advance.
  • Keep sites clean, tidy and litter-free.
  • Minimise noise and vibration, for instance, by using quiet equipment and locating it away from residential areas.
  • Avoid burning and bonfires.
  • Damp down dust.
  • Direct lighting away from neighbouring properties.
  • Modify activities that cause odour or steam.
  • Keep animals to high standards of welfare.
  • Deal with complaints rapidly and effectively and learn lessons from them to stop the same thing from happening again.

Key Actions

  • Take all reasonable steps to prevent or minimise a nuisance or a potential nuisance:
  • Identify activities that may cause a nuisance through the SafetyHub risk assessment process.
  • Seek to change these activities, if feasible, to stop or reduce the potential to cause a nuisance.
  • Inform neighbours and others in advance of activities that may affect them and have the potential to cause a nuisance.
  • Control and monitor activities with the potential to cause a nuisance.
