Hair
In this episode of Case Notes, Dr Mark Porter looks at hair.
Most men, and quite a few women, will have noticeable thinning by the time they reachÌýtheir late forties – a process that, for many, will start in their early twenties.
Mark willÌýbe learning more about the genetics behind going bald, and reviewing the latest treatments available – for both sexes.
Genetics of hair loss in women
At least 1 in 20 British women will experience significant hair loss by their late forties, rising to 1 in 3 by the age of 70.
Andrew Messenger is consultant dermatologist at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield and isÌýleading a team that is investigating the genetics of female pattern hair loss.

Cold cap therapy an chemo
Barbara Myers visits the Royal Marsden to learn about what can be done to prevent hair loss in patients undergoing chemotherapy.Ìý
The hair follicle is particularly sensitive to chemotherapy, so hair loss is a common side effect. Not all types of chemo cause hair loss, but most do.Ìý But it’s not inevitable for all women thanks to the cold cap - a device that cools the scalp while the patient receives an infusion of chemo.
The cooler the scalp, the lower the blood flow to the hair follicles and the less the amount of drug that reaches them. A simple, but very effective solution - albeit one that doesn’t work for all women, or with all types of chemo.
