Head Injuries

Traumatic brain injuries are mainly the result of serious accidents on the roads or at work, assaults or falls.

Dr Mark Porter discovers how these injuries are treated today. He also finds out what happens during rehabilitation and the consequences for the people who had the accidents and their families.

His guest in the studio is Dr Richard Greenwood from the Institute of Neurology, Queen Square Department of Brain Repair & Rehabilitation.

Personality Change

One of the consequences of severe head trauma can be a change in the patient’s character.

We hear from a patient whose personality has changed noticeably since suffering a serious brain injury two years ago, and Prof. Jane Powell, Professor of Psychology at Goldsmiths College, tells Mark about her research in this area.

Making Headway

Caroline Swinburne visits Headway House in Cambridge, which caters for over 60 members who’ve suffered brain injuries.

The centre provides everything from structured exercise in the gym, or help with computer work in the IT suite, to cognitive therapy.
