Don McCullin
This week in a special edition of the programme Richard Uridge talks to landscape and war photographer Don McCullin.
Don began his career in the 1950s and his style and composition soon made an impact. His threatening, brooding black and white shots of the gangs of North London brought him to the attention of newspapers and he was soon working for the Sunday Times.
Sent to cover the civil war in Cyprus, he found himself in demand as a war photographer and the conflicts and famines that have punctuated the history of the 20th century have also defined his working life. His signature photograph of a shell-shocked GI in Vietnam has become iconographic. If one image can define an era, that photograph did it.
But Don McCullin's reputation as a war photographer of rare emotional power and style has come with a heavy price. He has seen and experienced enough violence and trauma to last several life times and it has left an indelible mark on his psyche. His decision to move to Somerset and use his talent to remind people of the beauty and contrast of the British landscape was a deliberate attempt to heal his emotional wounds and erase the memories of 30 years of conflict. But ,as he admits, it is a battle he has to fight every day. He loves his house in the country and he loves Somerset - he says they have kept his life balanced and prevented the ghosts of his past from consuming him.
