From Shetland to the Scilly Isles, Open Country travels the UK in search of the stories, the people and the wildlife that make our countryside such a vibrant place. Each week we visit a new area to hear how local people are growing the crops, protecting the environment, maintaining the traditions and cooking the food that makes their corner of rural Britain unique.

"The Isle of Purbeck starts as you leave Wareham, come over the causeway of the river Frome, and then suddenly you hit a completely different landscape. There鈥檚 a bit of heath land and then you come into Corfe and it really has an atmosphere all of its own, it really is quite special鈥, says Pam White, education officer, Corfe Castle.
The Isle of Purbeck is tucked away on the south eastern corner of Dorset. Although often spoken about as an island, it is in fact a peninsular, surrounded on three sides by water. Helen Mark鈥檚 exploration of Purbeck starts at its very heart, Corfe Castle, a magnificent medieval ruin that dominates the landscape. She meets Pam White and Nancy Grace from The National Trust and discovers what makes Purbeck and Corfe Castle in particular so special.
Kimmeridge Bay is where amateur palaeontologist Steve Etches has spent the last 23 years extracting fossils. He takes Helen on a tour of the bay and explains how his obsession with the Kimmerage clay has nearly cost him his life. Helen also meets marine biologist Peter Tindsley who walks her across the mountains of seaweed found in the aptly titled "stink corner".
Helen finishes her exploration of the Isle of Purbeck in Wool, where she tries her hand at making hurdles. Alan Brown is a sixth generation hurdle maker who is so proud of the uniqueness of Purbeck that he has written and published two books about the region.
We'd like to thank listener Alan Butcher for suggesting that we visit Purbeck.
