Penti explains why they catch anacondas
The Waorani are renowned warriors – they have been fighting to protect themselves and their land for many years. As a show of bravery and to gain spiritual power, Penti and his family ritually catch and release anacondas. They believe that they come from anacondas and have many beliefs surrounding these creatures.
Now as the threats on their ancestral land increase through oil exploitation, they are working with a scientist to combine their skills at anaconda catching with scientific research to check the health of the anacondas.
