Giant's gastronomy

The Giant's Causeway has long been the stuff of legends. It was once believed that a giant, Finn McCool, built these steps so he could cross to Scotland and bring back his true love. Equally far-fetched was the idea that it was shaped using picks and shovels. Luckily science came to the rescue at the end of the 18th century when geologists realised that it was formed as the result of massive volcanic activity. There are plenty of things to see here. The gorse bushes are a great place to find orb spiders which catch insects blown in by the stonng winds. The bird life is surprisingly good and varied - curlew, oystercatcher and gulls. Chris Packham lies in the Giant's Boot - an armchair shaped rock formation - surrounded by the stench of tons of rotting seaweed. It does give a stunning view of all the birds that have come to feed on the sandhoppers and flies: starlings by the dozen, pied wagtail, wheatear, rock pipit. Most of them are young birds come to feast on this bounty.
