Nottingham Evening Post
Recently The Evening Post was revamped (again)and they cut out some
information eg, "Pound Abroad" and "World Weather". As the holiday
season is fast approaching I asked them to reinstate there two articals.
It seems that they will only tell the public once a week now. It's
a good job there's Teletex. I suppose they will bring it back daily
come winter!!!

Skateboarding
I am a mother with a child of 9 years old who loves skateboarding.
But i am having a huge amount of problems finding somewhere decent
enough to go and practice. I can see the problems on both sides concerning
the kids needing somewhere to skate, but being bothersome to the public,
although myself i have found the kids friendly. I the suggest the
coucil put some money into building a skateboarding park, it seems
there is always money for something else and perhaps then both problems
will be solved.

RATS
I know Rats have been around for hundreds of years, and there are
bound to be some living in the inner city, but I couldnt beleive
my eyes when I saw several cross Derby Road in Canning Circus on
Fiday night and more in Bulwell. Am I the only one to have seen
these and are we in for an epidemic ??

Of course there
are rats living around Derby Road and Canning Circus. They are on
their way to Bulwell for a 'night-out' But not to worry S.McC. When
the NET tram is operational, the rats will travel to Bulwell by
the tram, so you won't see them very often. All's well that ends

Ever seen "They"
This isnt an actual ghost story that I was going to submit, but
i just wanted to take a chance and ask anyone reading this a question.
Somewhere between 1990-1999, HBO had a movie on called "They". I
believe that it starred Venessa Redgrave but I cant quite remember.
The story was about a 12 year old girl or so, who went to her ballet
recidal dissappointed that her father had missed it while at work.
After the recidal dad shows up in the parking lot and the girl decides
to ride home with mom instead. the mother gets in a crash, and the
girl dies while having unfinished business with her father. The
father sees a photo of this secluded house, and finds it one day
which happens to be filled with the spirits of young ghost children,
the only deal is-The old woman who owns the forest/ house can see
them all and guard them all even though shes blind. I cant seem
to find this movie! anywhere, so if anyone has info on this movie,
where i can buy it or even if u know what the hell im talking about
and liked it as well, you can email.

Tolls
There are two issues for me, firstly the cost of public transport
and secondly the length of time it would take to get to work. Travelling
by bus from North Nottinghamshire to the City would cost me over
拢4 a day return fare plus another 拢1.40 return to Sandfield Centre.
The first bus on the time table would pick me up at 7.30. I would
arrive at work around 9.30 a.m. (That's if the bus actually turned
up)I would never get to my early morning meetings and would not
be able to do my job effectively. For the same amount of money and
in less time I can take my son to school at Rainworth, my daughter
to work and my other son to University. I will leave you to guess
the amount of bus fare it would cost all of us for the week. Why
would I want to go back to using the bus? Charging a toll to get
into the City seems may deter people from coming into the City at
all. Workplace parking levy - fine, even parking meters - a necessary
evil but Tolls - no thankyou. Let's have a bus serives that meet
the needs of travellers, trains that run on time and are fairly
priced; more proper cycle tracks rather painted lines on pavements
which are causing distress to pedestrians who are starlted by cyclists
approaching from behind. Let's be more creative and better better
use of our canl and River systems for public transport. Once upon
a time therte was a railway a railway track from North Nottingham
I could have hopped on the train outside my backdoor - those were
he days hey?

Tolls
I am generally in favour of the toll to enter Nottingham City the
city just has to much traffic passing through it, you can smell
the pollution from the vehicles on a still day not to mention the
noise. Regarding the cost of fares on buses this really I would
think a chicken and egg scenario. No doubt the fares are high as
not many people use the services so perhaps if this toll meant more
people on buses perhaps the prices would come down. From memory
you used to be able to buy a card, which gave you, unlimited travel
for a month for a one off payment this was a good saving. The same
is true regarding the bus routes really not much point putting on
a new bus route if there is little call for it. As for bike tracks
well we have all seen the pathetic attempts at this one as Margaret
has already said proper cycle tracks in stead of the white painted
line. Which if originally was a part of the pavement the pedestrian
still use's as a pavement and if was originally a road the m! ot!
orist still drives down or park cars on it

Saint George's
Day
Saint George's Day reply to James Hogarth I whole heatedly agree
with James Hogarth, St George's Day should be made far more of,
when I was at school many years ago The 23rd of April was celebrated
as a matter of coarse. From memory the on the nearest Sunday to
the 23rd of April the Scouts, Cubs, Girl Guides and Brownies used
to march through the street of Nottingham and all finish up at one
of the larger churches in Central Nottingham. The streets would
be lined with people cheering and waving the English flag. I must
confess that I am not aware that this is still carried out perhaps
it is? I think England still is a great place to live in despite
its many problems, which inflict it. Perhaps the English no longer
care about this country which is very strange when you hear of people
from other countries taking extreme measures in attempting to enter
England. I have heard talk of extra bank holidays perhaps 23rd of
April would be a good one to go for. If you search the Internet
there are few pages covering St George's Day, I wonder how many
English children even now about St George? I suspect very few. The
URL's below may be of some interest to some one ? http://www.bombardier.co.uk/stgeorgesday.php

Re the dumped cars on the tram line- if they are removed as quickly
as dumped cars are at present then the place will gridlock. Then to
really confuse matters what if two or three are dumped in different

garden competition
This is just the type of nonsensical scheme which should be stopped.
The Council waste tens of thousands of pounds on "Nottingham in
Bloom" & associated competitions. All this causes the council Tax
to go up year on year. They should just stick to essentials & stop
trying to gloss over the underlying rot.

Garden Competition: Reply to
I
accept like most things some is going to object and take the opposite
view, I personally think the gardening competition is a good idea
along with many other activities the Nottingham and other councils
do. Bert Fegg suggests that this and other activities cause's the
council tax to go up year on year. I have in the past been involved
with some of the council activities and from my own experience little
money is spent on these activities. The people that wish to take
part in these activities have to pay to take part, also there tends
to be sponsors which donate money, gifts and people to assist the
activity. As for Nottingham City and the local councils taking part
then I see nothing wrong in this. The council tries to promote Nottingham
by whatever means and by doing this, attracts people and business
to Nottingham. This in turn generates revenue in Nottingham for
the people of Nottingham. I am not suggesting that this gardening
competition will in itself bring in directly revenue to Nottingham
but indirectly it will. By make Nottingham a little better-looking
place to visit. As for only supplying essentials well one man essential
is another non-essential. I do not think Nottingham is glossing
over under lying rot, but some times the progress may appear very
slow.

Nottingham Garden Competition
The process of judgeing this competition should use the following
order of subjects,Design, Interest.Originality,All year round interest,Use
of trees,shrubs and perennials,environmental use of cuttings,division
and seed saving etc. The last subject to be considered should be
the utilisation and planting of annual bedding plants [especially
if purchased in bulk from garden centres] On the whole such plants
are wasteful of earths resources and should be avoided if not from
ones own seed savings.

In reply to R.F. Grigg, of Wollaton. The garden competition is judged
taking into consideration the design and general arrangement of
the garden; the flowers, shrubs and perennials growing in the garden,
and the neatness, tidiness and cleanliness of the garden. Whilst
the competition is judged during the summer months when annual bedding
plants can be seen in abundance, the judges do consider the garden
as a whole and commendation is given to those entrants who develop
their gardens from cuttings and seeds.

home and relax in front of a bright fluorescent light for a couple

I can't believe that there is the possibility of this world loosing
another bright spot [Raleigh] from peoples lives. I have been to England
only once but Nottingham was a must. It brings us to a time in our
lives when we were young and carefree. We remember the stories and
the television shows and the movies with great pleasure. I know that
progress is a tremendous thing but we need our past to keep history
alive. Just the start of the tv show with Richard Greene and the sound
of the arrow being shot through the air brings back those memories
that are associated with your city. Why would you want to destroy
something that has made you the city you are today?

Raleigh Bicycles
Raleigh USA sells bikes here, but they are not made in Nottingham.
When my brother came to visit a couple of years ago, I had him bring
a real Nottingham Raleigh bike with him (Much to his chagrin!) Now
I'm glad I did. It is hard to buy anything here in the US that is
made here. So it is not only a problem for Britain. I always try to
buy US made or UK made (very hard to find) But the Made in China stuff
is flooding the market. And it's not all cheap either. I bought a
very expensive pair of boots by mail and they were made in China.
I'm very sad that Raleigh is moving out of Nottingham, but the writing
is on the wall. Buy British if you can!

Skateboarding is evil
Its nice to know that the council have gotten their act together and
banned skateboarding from the streets of nottingham. It always annoyed
me seeing young adults enjoying themselves and getting excercise on
skateboards in the square. Im glad someone has put the serious problem
of skateboarding above drug related crime, violent crime and the amount
of homeless people on the streets. I have my fingers crossed for bikes
rollerskates and anything that rolls to be banned in the near future.

RALEIGH
CLOSURE
16th March,2002---I too am very saddened that Nottingham's own cycle
manufacturer is forced to close it's operations here in Nottingham.
The problem I gather has been a long standing one, due to imports
from eastern countries being cheaper. Having purchased a Raleigh "Badged"cycle
from our local 'Mr Read' (stockist), I found it very well made and
it's quality quite satisfactory, so I can only feel that it is the
low wage these eastern workers get in their own country that allows
the cycles and components to be 'dumped' here at a low cost. I listened
to Radio Nottingham yesterday morning and there was a spokesman explaining
why Raleigh's management could not compete with these masses of imported
cycles being offered at such low prices. After all, sufficient profit
has to be achieved by Raleigh to maintain a reasonable wage to assemblers.
This spokesman made a very good point, to which I am in full agreement,
if it could be adopted by the UK. This dumping of cheap cycles was
experienced by France, and we all know how the cycle fits into the
French lifestyle. Apparently, they authorise an individual quality
check on EVERY imported cycle. The Quality Controllers can only pass
but a limited number each working day,and they say this controls the
number of imported cycles into their shops. Now I don't know if such
a system would help Raleigh to put their 'Pheonix' logoed cycles back
into an assembly line, but surely it's worth considering, because
for all our lives the citizens of Nottingham have had long-standing
manufacturers, such as Raleigh- Players- Boots-Lace manufacturers,
and of course,Robin Hood. All synonimous with our 'Queen of the Midlands'
image, and yes! even Brian Clough's stamp is embedded. So will the
powers that be, do something now, before a final curtain comes down
on this vital industry. The government, as we know, is attempting
to have us leave our cars at home and use the bicyle, and it will be
a tragedy if by doing so,only a cheaply produced imported machine
is available. People still want to BUY BRITISH.

It is
very sad to see that the a few allotment holders in Bullwell have
cost the city of Nottingham so many jobs. People really ought to consider
what consequences their action might have. This should act as a lesson
to the small group of people who are protesting against the tram.
Many other cities would love to have such investment going into their
transport systems.

I hope Darnton is not serious about pulling out of Great Britain,
the reason these foreign bikes are 25% cheaper than Nottingham bikes
is because they are JUNK they fall to bits in a few months, so what,
I have to pay 25% more, I get a superior bike and I provide employment
to the workforce in Nottingham , maybe you are saying, Well I would
prefer to save the 25% and buy the foreign one, well I suggest you
