Rubbish swept
into the canal
I thought I'd bring to your attention the way that some of the pubs
along side the canal (Via Fossa, Waterfront, Bar Risa etc) are treating
the water ways. I was there yesterday to be shocked by empty bottles
of beer being thrown into the canal.
This was consistantly occuring whilst the pub staff just watched.
One individual picked up a wheely bin full of glass bottles and
threw it in the canal whilst pub security just watched. Staff of
the waterfront pub were also seen sweeping broken glass into the
canal instead of disposing of it in the decent way.
I couldn't believe it.
When confronted to why they didn't throw it in the bin, they simply
said that it was easier to sweep it into the canal. I'm no expert
but broken glass cannot be good for the local wildlife and I am
discusted that these pubs are getting away with it. Is there anything
you or anyone else can do to help this situation?
Thanks
Steve Jones
Further to Steve
Jones posting regarding the local businesses sweeping rubbish into
the canal. The local authority should get involved, and should be
severely deal with the businesses concerned perhaps a heavy fine
for dumping rubbish in the canal. The trouble is that we generally
as a society just dump rubbish anywhere. I have walked through the
city and seen on many occasions' paper, food cigarette ends just
being thrown down on the floor. No doubt these same people complain
about the city being dirty, this city of ours does not just become
dirty on its own. The people in it make it dirty. I seem to remember
posting about pigeons and the fact there were so many of them why?
Because the people of Nottingham just throw the remainder of the
food they no longer what on the floor.

Renewable
energy
Here's something that both Bogush and myself can probably agree
on - power generation is one of the worst contributors to global
warming. So... Greenpeace has joined up with npower to launch Juice,
a new, green electricity supply that for the first time costs exactly
the same as ordinary electricity supplies. Power generation will
be from offshore wind turbines, initially suppling 50,000 subscribers
- whilst it's being built they will provided with other green electricity.
When more than 50,000 customers have signed up another station will
be built. You can connect up by phoning 0800 316 2610 or at www.npower.com/juice.
And they'll sort out the changes with your existing supplier. I
think it's great that Greenpeace is doing something positive - and
it doesn't sound like it will cost us any extra cash. We can all
do our 'little bit' and this one doesn't involve those unthinkable
lifestyle changes.

Stanley - how
much carbon dioxide is produced in the design / manufacture / transportation
/ erection / repair and replacement of these turbines. Presumably
a large amount of steel/copper is used which has to be made from
extracted ores. These ores are removed from the earth using machinery
which itself has been made from high emission processes. When you
then also consider the ongoing maintenance / replacement of worn
out parts, cabling etc. do these turbines actually put more energy
back than they take out?. I think not - you don't get owt for nowt!

Bert, it seems you have taken over Bogush's mantle of "Angriest

something for less than at the moment. Cheer up.

Drug
Users
Eastwood's growing heroin problem has been highlighted by the Evening
Post's War on Drugs campaign.
There are 50 registered heroin users, aged 16-25, in the town and
at least 50 more who dabble in the drug.
A police spokesman said they were aware that the cemetery was being
used by drug users.
"We are patrolling the area and have identified one of the offenders,"
he said.
There should
be no need to patrol the area - these people, being registered,
are known to the Authorities.
Anybody registered as a drug user should be locked away
and treated until they are no longer dependent. Why is this minority
(who seem able to use up a disproportionate amount of public funds
via the NHS, Police, Local Authority free housing and Social Services
)allowed to roam freely. It is a well known fact that they supplement
their "income" via crime. The general public should not
be expected to put up with it. Never mind pandering to the Civil
Liberties bunch - lock these people away.

In 10 years time, Nottingham will be one big executive apartment.

Speed
Cameras / Road Humps
Ther's no real need for any of these. If a system were to be developed
(the technology exists already) where traffic speeds were monitored
then new traffic lights could be used to halt traffic along that particular
stretch - a sort of stop/go penalty if you like. Motorists (me included)
would then realise that there is no point in excessive speed. If the
lights along a route were also phased to keep traffic moving then
this would reduce traffic congestion too - although this in particular
of course won't happen due to local authorities being anti car. Regarding
the stop/go system you will probably have people speeding and then
ignoring the red light but cameras could be used - these people are
the ones who speed now anyway in stolen / untaxed / no known keeper
vehicles.
Bert Fegg

and in reply...
I agree with speed cameras - if you keep to the speed limit you won't
get prosecuted. The question being - what is the speed limit you should
be driving at? There are many roads in Nottinghamshire which do not
have a realistic speed limit. Those which do are not signed conspicuously. They
are damaged or old and the lettering is faded. Take for example the
30 mph sign on Ratcliffe Gate, Mansfield. Any stranger coming off
the St Peters Way Ring Road, turning right to travel out of the town
towards Rainworth must use all their powers of observation to spot
the sign. No wonder some drivers have an attitude!!

Speed
Cameras
So everyone's favourite camera pilot is now being hailed a success.
Thats good going since they were deemed a failure only a couple of
months ago for not catching enough out and paying their keep.
Any chance they can be publicised now - as in so that the tourists/aliens
know why I'm doing exactly 30mph?
I'm just getting a little tired of constantly being tailgated for
1/2 mile on the A610 and the Ring Road. Useful though, that the police
appear to have stopped patrolling the Ring Road entirely since the
trap was installed.
Great for minimising time lost - although the bridge past Beechdale
Baths seriously needs sorting out as it has become a jump in its old
age, take it at 80 and you're airborne...
Speaking seriously for a minute - Yes the speed issue has to be resolved,
and the SPEC camera setup is highly effective at slowing cars down
over the course of its range. Used in tandem with a screen to flash
up the reg plate of an offender would be nice, it should stop drivers
threatening me at the lights after hovering an inch off my rear bumper.
These devices should be used responsibly or not at all. Rip them all
up, paint them bright pink, and stick them outside schools. Revenues
will drop - but we'll at least have fewer dead children (which I believe
the UK is still top in Europe at). Yes I am a 21 year old with a "tarted
up" car. No it doesn't go very fast.

Youth
Centres
I Live in the Warren Hill/Arnold area of Nottingham and would like
to know about Youth Clubs in the area. There used to be an excellent
Centre at the Bigwood School for all ages, but it closed in July last
year. Since then all we seem to see in the area are young people with
nothing to do and no where to go, which isnt helping the crime rate
in our area. A new centre in Top Valley has been talked about but
we have not heard or seen anything of it, also there is a Centre -
William Olds that is just sitting there that has been closed for Months.
Can anyone shed any Light ?

Re Big Wood
Youth Centre
In reply to the concerned resident from Warren Hill, i agree that
there are certainly too few activities on the estate to keep the children
amused during the holidays. Admittedly there is plenty throughout
the city to do, such as Ice Skating, the Cinema and so on, but we
do suffer locally for facilities. The activities at Big Wood School
had to end due to the growing number of pupils on roll over the last
year, due to the closure of Padstow School and a re-organisation of
the school buildings took place which means the activity space is
not available. More over, staffing the activities is also proving
very hard. Southglade Sports Hall still provides lesiure facilities,
as does Bestwood Baths and I believe that William Olds was closed
due to staffing difficulties and concerns with drugs. The Top Valley
centre on the estate is still being discussed at the council and a
recent 'speak out' session was held for residents and one for Bestwood
Park took place today, so lets keep our fingers crossed!

Youth Centres
In reply to Concerned Resident, Warren Hill, and a Fellow Concerned
Resident, Nottingham: The new youth centre at Top Valley, in the former
health centre, is due to open on Saturday, September 1, with a full-time
youth worker in charge and offering a wide range of activities for
all young people. William Olds youth club is currently undergoing
a major refurbishment and will also be reopening on September 1. Even
so, there are summer activities taking place in the centre, which
are attracting a number of young people from the area. There is also
a wonderful climbing facility at William Olds. Bestwood Youth Project,
which has received national recognition for its work, offers a wide
range of activities for young people from all around the area, including
outdoor pursuits and residential opportunities. There is always a
problem recruiting enough youth workers so there is a constant need
for volunteers to help give our young people the opportunity to take
part in worthwhile activities. If you can help with play provision
or more organised activities, including helping to run the climbing
wall at William Olds, Area 1 team manager Martin Naylor would love
to hear from you. You can telephone him on 0115 915 7569.

drugs in
prison
Nottingham prison is one of the worst in Britain for illegal drug
taking, home office figures have revealed.
Almost 100 of
the 430 inmates tested positive for drugs, including cannabis, cocaine
and heroin. The drugs are often smuggled in by visitors, who hide
them in birthday cards and the soles of trainers.
Time for a
glass screen / phone link for visitors, then they wouldn't be able
to pass things over.

hi my name is Adam and i was wondering why people are not allowed

any plans for new skate parks to be built in Nottingham. I think
that if a new skate park was built in the city centre or on the

The problems
of lack of youth amenities (Skate board areas, mountain bike tracks,
Youth Clubs etc) is not restricted to Nottingham alone. This is
a National problem, to provide alternative release for youthful
energy and exuberance and prevent the drift into crime. One solution
would be to make the costs of providing such facilities tax deductible.
In this way, local companies would become more involved in their
own communities - and the loss in overall tax revenue to the Government
would be negligible. So, if you like the idea, write to your MP,
as such changes can only be done through Parliament.

Perhaps if those members of the constabulary who sit behind desks

Lovely to hear about the up and coming young skaters in Nottingham.
I hope they receive greater support than Jane and Christopher did
when they were training. American skaters usually have the edge because
of the amount of time they are able to train and the tremendous support.
Good luck to the youngsters, we look forward to hearing more about
them. My wife has always been keenly interested in ice skating having

Notts police
have failed to reach their own targets to cut crime and catch criminals.
This is the situation facing the county today, after force chiefs
released the latest performance indicators, detailing recorded crime
and detection rates.
In all but a handful of crime categories, people are committing
more crimes... and the police are catching fewer criminals.
The force aimed to reduce all crime in Notts by one per cent on
figures from the same time last year, but crime has rocketed, rising
generally by 6.2% across the county — and with violent
crimes up by 3.2%. Perhaps
performance would improve if:
1. Less resources were used on victimising motorists.
2. Police stopped acting as social workers, attending
every little household row on the sink estates.
3. They set realistic targets to achieve.

Targets
In reference to the message concerning the failure of Notts Police
to reach its targets I have to add that it is no wonder. I have
already posted a message on the board moaning about the standard
of the Policing and the latest news comes as no surprise. However,
is a crime a 'crime' when a Crime Reference number is allocated
or just when a call is placed (either local or 999)? If it is the
Crime Reference number then the figures could be even bleaker as
I very rarely get a Crime Reference Number from Radford. Car Windows
smashed (mine 5 times since January 2001), Cars Dented (my car has
been dented four times since April), attempted theft of my car (twice),
our front wall being demolished and out of all that I only got two
Crime Reference numbers... the rest the Police were not interested
and said I would only get one for more serious offences... Need
I say more?

G8 protest
Genoa
Is anything going to be done about the police brutality at the recent
G8 summit protest in Genoa, Italy I wonder?
Talk about multiple
breach of human rights. I reckon Kofi Anan ought to move residence
to Genoa in order to sort this out.
Fascism has
no place in modern civilisation so why do we have to put up with
it? Surely an EU countries' police force can be monitored. And surely
the police officers that are guilty of beating innocent people to
within a whisker of death deserve punishment.
Im not niave
to the fact that some of the protesters may have gone to Genoa purely
to cause violence. I think the local residents of Genoa and anyone
else adversly affected by this outrageous display of inhumanity
deserve justice and compensation and apologies from our government
in a more than generous form.
I also believe
that anyone found guilty of this violence irrespective of his or
her country of birth should be banned from travelling outside their
own nations borders for a minimum of 5 years.

Why
the complaining about the University of Nottingham accepting a donation
from the tobacco industry to help fight cancer? Surely if we can find
a cure for cancer (a disease currently affecting a close friend of
mine) then I for one don't care where the money comes from. If I had
cancer - and I'm grateful I haven't - then I can honestly say I wouldn't
be bothered who paid for my treatment as long as I got better. If
the tobacco industry wants to help to pay for the damage it has done
then so be it. This is such a vital area of research that all the
money received should be gratefully accepted - whatever its origin.

Bus Changes
- In Reply to Sylvia
Unlike what appears to be a minority of people in Nottingham complaining
about the proposed NCT service changes, I would like to stress my
great appreciation for Nottingham City Transport's Managing Director
and staff are trying to sort out the problems that face bus users
everday: namely reliability and ease of use. For some time people
have moaned about buses failing to turn up, some bunching together
and often being overcrowded. At last, NCT attempts to deal with this
issues and what happens everyone starts moaning. You cannot have it
both ways - either it stays in the state it is in or it improves to
what looks like an excellent proposal. I am sure they are aware of
what they are doing, they have held a public consultation exercise
so we can air our views and they have responded to them. We are informed
that only 3% of journeys involve cross-city services, so why should
97% of us suffer? Everyone agrees that one-bus is easier, but we have
to realise that it is not possible to continue such services when
they cause delays and often fail to turn up. As a regular traveller
between Bestwood Park and Clifton, i have no direct bus, I have to
either change in the City or change on to Linkline 53 along the Ring
Road. Why should 3% have direct bus services when the rest of us have
to change buses on a regular basis? I welcome the new network and
look forward to it's introduction in September.

Violent Crime
in Nottinghamshire
Violent crime
on the increase Well I bet that a surprise to most people, our streets
in Nottingham get worse by the day. As I have pointed out before
it starts with the young children which become unruly at a very
early age, and receive little or no parental support though their
early years. They are too much trouble to their parents, the teachers
at the schools cannot handle them. The police cannot touch them,
many that do finish up in a police station have to wait for a person
of responsibility that is more often as not, not a parent. As their
parent cannot be bothered to attend the police station, no doubt
this interferes with their television watching or public house attendance.
These groups of similar minded children gather together like a pack
of animal's looking/waiting for they're prey. We are slowly drifting
into a situation where areas on Nottingham are becoming no go areas,
where decent people are wary of going out, old people are frighten
to open the d! oo! r. This is the society that each and every one
of us has caused either through; the so-called do gooders, Social
Services and the like, or the apathetic many that do not care as
long as they are involved or affected. The root cause needs addressing
"the parents", the way ward children are just the result. "Show
me a child of 5 years old, I will should you a man (or woman)" In
other words the die is case early in life. Its time for parents
to be totally responsible for their off spring, its not difficult
for most couples to produce a child it is a real challenge to be
a parent and not to pass on their inability or lack of care onto
others.
John Foster
Arnold Nottingham
It is no wonder that number of crimes is still going up in Nottinghamshire
despite going down elsewhere when Police can never be bothered to
turn up to anything. We have had no end of problems in our area
within the City of Nottingham over the past 12 months involving
the smashing of car windows, vandalism of homes and other property
and general abuse caused by a group of youths. It took 4 months
of constant calling to the Police for them to turn up and when they
did they were not interested and said it was all the residents'
fault. When the Police did start to take it seriously there was
a flurry of activity (and I have to admit they do now come round
very occasionally) but they do not do anything about the problems.
They keep coming up with excuse after excuse, normally that no one
is willing to give evidence even though nobody has been asked. So,
is it no wonder that crime is getting worse in Nottingham? The Police
have no motivation - even for the smallest thing it is now necessary
to dial 999 instead of the local Police station as that is the only
way for the Police to show any interest. It also makes me very angry
to hear that they have disbanded the drugs squad when Nottingham
has a very serious drugs problem (there is drug taking in our street
- the Police know where the drugs are coming from but no action
is being taken).

Well as far as I know, prostitution is not Illegal and therfore the

and anyone found doing this can be liable for prosecution of some
kind. In my view prostitution should be illegal and should not be
