Raleigh Leaves Nottingham
Nottingham has always been closely associated with Raleigh Cycles.
It's factory on Faraday Road was once the biggest producer of cycles
in the world. Now the company is to pull out from the city completely.
This follows a series of takeovers and shake-ups that has for the
past couple of years been wresting control away from its home town.
Most people in my age group would have been the proud owner of a Raleigh
bike (the lucky ones owning Choppers and Grifters). Later in adult
life, I spent several years working with the company; designing product
catalogues, maintaining the website and producing interactive CDs.
We've already witnessed the demise of the coal industry in the region
and I know that things need to move on. But I suspect that like the
Coal Industry in Mansfield and North Nottinghamshire, our rich industrial
heritage will be buried and forgotten.

Raleigh
Whilst I am very saddened by the closure of the Raleigh factory I
do object strongly to MP Graham Allen pointing the finger at the allotment
holders in Bulwell who have been fighting to hold on to their allotments.
He said in a recent interview that the action by the allotment holders
had been the final straw. Rubbish, Raleigh have admitted that advances
in cycle manufacturing techniques abroad have led to cheap imports
which Raleigh cannot compete with. Raleigh must be partly to blame
in that they haven't addressed this problem to any great degree. However,
if the blame is to be placed anywhere then it must be placed with
the Government, who Mr Allen represents. They have done nothing to
stem the flow of cheap cycle imports into this country. Perhaps they
should've taken a leaf out of the Americans book who, in times of
ecconomic downturn, just close the doors to imported goods. No, Mr
Al! le! n, please don't use the allotment holders as scapegoats.

Raleigh Closure
As the author of 'Images of England - Radford' and with father mother,
uncle and grandfather both employed at Raleigh for many years during
my upbringing, I feel sad that this company is to close. Thousands
of local workers were employed at the Faraday Road, Wollaton Road
and Triumph Road sites in the 50s and 60s, and this is truly the end
of an era You can view my Raleigh and Radford webpages at www.radfordgallery.fsnet.co.uk

Raleigh Closure
What a shame - I now live in New ZEaland and my very first job was
at Raleigh Industries in the Cycle Design office(my father also worked
there in the factory). I recently bought a new bike in New ZEaland
and was proud to say it was made by RAleigh (probably not in Nottingham
but at least my thoughts were pleasant). Yvonne (who I believe is
now a senior Manager) was a co secretary with me and I would love
to hear from her. I am coming home for a trip in April and will have
a nostalgic trip around the place if I can. I wish all the employees
all the best.

Raleigh Closure
raleigh management were always arrogant and believed that their products
would appeal to everyone. they went through a stage when they heavily
promoted their products - the result being that their image was greatly
improved. then they got complacent and decided to cut advertising
etc. and wasted all that good money by not continuing to promote the
product. manufacture abroad? crazy. not take advantage of its own
heritage - madness - no interest in industrial tourism - which could
well have saved the company. they are where they deserve to be, i
am very sorry to say. arrogance gets you no where.... i feel sorry
for the rest of the loyal employees who lived in hope.

16 and
17 year olds should they get the vote?
I dont know if anyone has mentioned this but, if a 16 - 17 year old
is working they have to pay NIC and they get taxed, yet they cant
vote on on who they want to do what with that money. What im saying
is they are paying taxese etc and not getting a say on who spends
it and on what. Now anyone sane can see that this is wrong. However
i dont think 16 - 17 year olds should get the vote. I can remember
having silly arguments about it at school when i was 16 and 17 and
you allways deffended the party your parents voted for. I think they
shouldnt have to pay any tax untill they are 18 cos its just fair.

If that is fair, then whilst you are 16 and 17, and not paying tax,
you cannot use the NHS, roads, college, council run facilities, since
you have not paid to do so.

In reply to "16 and 17 year old should they get the vote?" You have
made a tenuous link between age, paying taxes and working for pay.
If I may I would point out that many children of an age younger than
16 pay tax albeit via VAT every time they buy just about any thing
they pay 17.5% VAT. Some children even work and earn large amounts
of money i.e. those that take part in films, advertisements television
programs they pay income tax, and they in some cases possibly earn
more than their parents. I ask would it make sense that say child
of 6 earning lets say 拢20,000 a year from their efforts in a film
or TV series have the vote? The ability to pay taxes does not indicative
of the ability to comprehend what the individual believes is best
for the society we all live in and make sensible decision on any topic
when presented with the facts. 18 years young is plenty early enough.

Mess outside Nottingham Trent University
Every time i walk past Nottingham Trent University, i am appalled
by the amount of rubbish that is swept acroos the street (Mainly Shakespeare
street) This isn't just litter being dropped - its a University approved
scheme where some muppets hang around the university handing out flyers
to the uniterested passers by - hence the sea of old cardboard and
paper flyers everywhere. I am concerned firstly with the amount of
paper that gets wasted and secondly the poor people who have to clean
this up. The young people at universitys expect our support - but
why should we give it when they choose to behave so anti-socially
towards out planet.

Hello, To stop hoax emergency calls why don't they give people
a pin code to verify that the call is genuine. To apply for a pin
code they will have to register there home address and home phone
number, simple as that. Job done.

The idea of a pin is not practical. What happens to people with mobile
phones? People who make emergency calls from other people's homes
- do they use their own code or the house address they are calling
from? Public payphones - how do they work. To register there home
address, they could send in anyones details and still carry on.

why not put the money from these small projects into opening a indoor

Hunting
Hi, My point of view on hunting may be controversial, but I think
its right. Most people are against hunting because it kills foxes
in a cruel, but natural, way. I am a very keep zoologist and conservationist,
and the way I see it is that if hunting were to be banned we would
lose the whole of the fox population within a year. Why? you ask.
Because the hunt is the foxes protection. Without it the farmers have
no option but to carry out the culling themselves, which is uncontrollable,
and they wouldn't hesitate to wipe out populations on their land.
Now decide, would you prefer a very small percentage of foxes to be
killed in a natural way, which actually helps the species because
it removes the sick or diseased ones, or would you prefer none at
all, because that's what will happen if hunting were banned. The choice
is yours. I personally will be marching proudly at the next Liberty
and Liv! el! ihood march in the knowledge that I'm giving the fox,
and the countryside the best possible support.
Henry
Shrewsbury, Shropshire
and in reply...
In
reply to "Hunting" by Henry. I do not think your view is controversial,
quite the reverse you support a view which has been held for many
years, too many. To suggest that killing of another animal is an acceptable
means of enjoying your self and also calling it hunting. Hunting indeed,
where a pack of hounds and many people on horse back dressed in red.
Chase an animal over miles of country side till the animal is so tired
it can no longer run, then the hounds tear it apart for their human
companions to gleefully watch the terrified animal finally die in
total terror. This you call cruel and natural, yes I agree its very
cruel as for natural how is it natural? Pack of hounds several riders
and horse's natural? Please do not try to hide behind the comment
that if we do not hunt the fox as we do the farmers will kill them
all, that being the case why do that not do it now? You argument is
basically flawed and holds little substance. I personally would not
and in fact could not carry out any job that required that I assist
in any way the unnessersary killing of an animal. I find little to
be proud of in marching telling people of what you appear to support.
As for your march well I would call it a display of mans arrogance
of being superior by his own definition, in the animal world. I personally
hope that when this free vote happens, if it happens, that all fox
hunting will be banned.

England's green and pleasant land?
Why oh why do people have trouble using bins for their rubbish and
cleaning up after their dogs? It seems to be the norm to dump it wherever
the fancy takes you. As I walk around I spot rubbish everywhere and
have on occasions picked up something someone has thrown down and
given it back to them. As a smoker I extinguish my cigarettes properly
and either put the butt in the bin or take it home. Chewing gum should
be binned too. PLEASE USE THE BINS PROVIDED OR TAKE YOUR RUBBISH HOME
WITH YOU! Are there really so many irresponsible dog owners? On my
few minutes walk to and from Bulwell station I spend most of the time
dodging dog mess. It is a health hazard. As a responsible former dog
owner this really gets my goat. PLEASE CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR DOGS! Both
offences carry large fines. Wouldn't it be better to be proud of Nottingham
than to be ashamed of it? If everyone did their bit who knows we may
save a bit of Council Tax to spend on vital services.

I can't beleive that so many people have commented so negatively about

I would like to ask Adrian, from Nottingham why i should give beggers
money and think myself lucky that I'm not in their position? I have
had a far from easy upbringing (as have many), and I work hard in
a job that I don't particularly enjoy, for a relatively small amount.
I have taken jobs that i hate and lived in rented accommodation that
leaves a lot to be desired. These people are quite capable of signing
on, and a lot of them do! They are the only one's who can pick themselves
up and get themselves out of their situation, homeless people do not
have to be these 'poor unfortunate people'. Big Issue sellers are
attempting to get themselves out of the situation. People who sit
by cash point machines with their dogs asking for money are intimidating
people and in todays society it can be quite unnerving to have a strange
man asking for money from you when yo! u'! re at the cash point! There
are many jobs to be had if you are not choosey, and for those homeless
people who are fleeing violence or abuse there is help out there,
but only they can ask for it. I feel angry when people ask me for
money in the street, they do not know my situation, I do not have
very much money and when I want to treat myself I should not be made
to feel guilty. I am always willing to help someone in need, just
not by giving handouts.

I agree with Rebecca as the previous individual is forgeting one keyword
"choice" people should not feel obligated to give if they do not wish
to. I am speaking as a person who has been a rough sleeper myself,
lived in all the homeless hostel except the YMCA.With a social security
in place and if they choose to sell the big issue why should I have
to give. With that notion it makes what is the next step? That like
saying Im desperate for sexuaul intercourse and if I ask a women she
must give it me as I am not getting any due to the masculization of
poverty and if they don't their just being mean. Once I put in that
context does the person still agree that we all must give? It is choice
is the keyword to ne and being not reasonable is perhaps another.
Everyone ask yourself in any situtuation when you have been reasonable
just to please someone else did you later wish you hadn! 't! ? Don't
you feel when were reasonble it was a form of control used by that
person to getting to do what they wanted you to do?

In reply... The Valentine鈥檚 Fair, which was sited on the Old Market
Square over the recent half-term week, is a much smaller fair than
Goose Fair and more suited to this space than the Forest Recreation
Ground as it enables more people access to the event. Valentine鈥檚
Fair has been operating since 1993 as a replacement for the Christmas

91热爆 News: - MMR Vaccine Despite constant reassurance to the public
at large that this MMR Vaccine is not harmful, parents still are
willing to put their children at risk, by not having them immunised.
I for one remember many of my friends when I was at school being
ill with one of these infections and in fact over my school years
3 children died from one of the three infections. I accept the concern
that as in all things there may be a possibility that some child
some where just may be affected by this injection. But there is
no evidence to support that view. If the parents care so much for
the well being of their children and their perceived possible effect
of the MMR vaccination why do they not pay for the single vaccine
under private medicine? The cost of such a vaccination would cost
a couple of packets of cigarettes or a few drinks in the local pub,
or perhaps these parents do not care that much? There is risk in
every thing we do, the trick is to minimise the risk, by offering
no protection to children is far from minimising the risk, its only
maximising the probable risk and all that means perhaps even the
dead of the child. Is that what we call parental care?

drivers
Just what is it about drivers in Nottingham? Here's a couple of tips;
the flashy orange things on the corners of your car are called indicators,
they're for letting other road users know your manouvering intentions,
try using them. On a similar theme, the bright amber thing on traffic
lights does not mean speed up and jump the lights causing others to
compensate for your complete stupidity and dangerous driving. I drive
through and across Nottingham and the County everyday with my job
and I've yet to make a single journey that hasn't involved avoiding
some incident with an 'ambler gambler'. Sort it out before you kill
