In a statement outside Downing Street, Mrs May said there was "far too much tolerance" of extremism in the UK. She said "difficult" and potentially "embarrassing" conversations were needed within the UK about dealing with the spread of extremism.

Mrs May said the three recent attacks in the UK - in Westminster, Manchester and London Bridge - were not connected, but said attackers could be inspiring and copying each other.

She said: "We are experiencing a new trend in the threat we face as terrorism breeds terrorism."

Prime Minister Theresa May has said it is time to say "enough is enough" when it comes to tackling terrorism. "We cannot and must not pretend that things can continue as they are," she said. She said the general election will go ahead as planned on Thursday.

Witnesses have been telling 91Èȱ¬ Radio 5 live what they saw in London Bridge last night.

Eric, who was on the bridge, said he saw the van "veer to the right and those people there, they were trying to run away from the van."

He said once the vehicle stopped the three people who got out "ran towards the people that they nearly ran over".

He said he thought they were going to try to check on the people on the bridge but "they literally just started kicking them, punching them, they took out knives and then they just, it was a rampage really."

Barts Health NHS Trust, in east London, has said it is continuing to treat 12 people at the Royal London Hospital.

Sophy Ridge's political review went ahead this morning, and she spoke to Lib Dem former deputy prime minster Nick Clegg:

Guys and St Thomas' Hospital, which is about 1.5 miles (2.5km) from the attack scene, has said it treated nine patients - six men and three women - since the attack. Five of the patients have since been discharged, while four patients - two men and two women - have been admitted, it said in a statement.

With the Prime Minister Theresa May diverted to chair the government's emergency committee, the Conservatives were the first to say they were suspending national campaigning.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn announced soon after that he was halting national campaigning until Sunday evening, and the Liberal Democrats have said they would put national campaigning on hold for "a short time".

It seems likely at this stage that the extent of any canvassing and campaigning up and down the country will be at the discretion of the parties and their candidates locally.

UKIP said they would not be suspending their campaign. Their leader Paul Nuttall said "this is precisely what the extremists would want us to do".

There is a massive queue of people waiting to be booked back into the Novotel in London Bridge which was evacuated last night.

Tourists I spoke to found themselves having to stay in other hotel lobbies in the area all night.

On talk of suspending the election, shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry says: "We shouldn't give them a moment."

She urges people to "come out defiantly and vote".

But she doesn't want to comment on security as an issue in the campaign, saying she's here to offer Labour's condolences.

She says she wants to "defend the essence of London as a multicultural and multiracial city".

Former Conservative chair Baroness Warsi tells ITV's Peston on Sunday programme: "This morning there had to be a Cobra meeting - but tomorrow we campaign, on Thursday we vote. You will not disrupt the way we live."

Labour former minister Ed Balls: "These terrorists want to grind our democracy to a halt - they won't succeed."

Both politicians emphasise campaigning will continue at a local level and resume in full on Monday.

With four days left, all the political parties were gearing up for the most important - and relentless - stage of the general election campaign.

It's not yet clear exactly how the London terrorist attack will affect the process, some may suggest that the election is postponed.

But Brexit Secretary David Davis has told the 91Èȱ¬ that would require legislation - not possible when parliament has now been dissolved.

"I don't think it can be done legally," he said.

The mayor of London Sadiq Khan said he believes the election should go ahead - not least as a demonstration the capital and country won't be cowed by the terrorists.

Ariana Grande's manager has conformed the will still go ahead later.

Scooter Braun said after the attacks in London Bridge and Manchester "we feel a sense of responsibility to honour those lost, injured and affected.

"We plan to honour them with courage, bravery, and defiance in the face of fear. Today's One Love Manchester benefit concert will not only continue, but will do so with greater purpose," he said.

Labour's Emily Thornberry has said the general election should not be delayed, telling the 91Èȱ¬'s Andrew Marr she was "acutely aware that what these murderous people want is to undermine our democracy and values".

Eyewitness Liam was looking out of the window of a flat in Borough Market when he saw a young man trying to get the attention of ambulance crews outside the Southwark Tavern, saying his friend had been stabbed.

He told that he saw another "dazed" man who looked like he had been stabbed "wandering around in the street".

"He was knocking on the window of the ambulance saying: 'Help me, please help me, I've been stabbed'", Liam said.
