A torch as a light source
Description
A demonstration of how a source of light is required to see objects in the dark. The presenter shines a torch around a dark room and sees shiny and white objects. The presenter also shows Boffin the cat鈥檚 eyes shining in the dark. She then turns the torch off and we cannot see anything - a source of light is required to see in the dark. The presenter goes on to explain that Boffin鈥檚 eyes do not actually glow in the dark and that they simply reflecting the light from the torch.
Classroom Ideas
Students could be asked to draw a diagram to explain why Boffin鈥檚 eyes are reflective when a light is shone on them, but cannot be seen in the dark. They could explore the properties of light, and discuss in relation to this scenario.
Alternatively, students could then design and plan an experiment to explore the reflectiveness of other objects and materials. They could speculate on the findings before observing, collecting and recording their findings. Students should then present and analyse the data and reflect upon the accuracy of their hypothesis.
