Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel tells BT Sport: "With away goals it would be better but we have another clean sheet and a well deserved one. It was hard work to not allow chances, they are a strong team, we were up and down with good and weaker moments but we never gave big chances away. We were solid, hard team work and a tough game but a deserved win.

"We changed a bit of structure to a midfield of three, we started excellent in the second half then got a bit passive after the goal. We were a bit deep and not active in the last line, we suffered a bit but never conceded chances, defended set-pieces very well and kept the belief. We fought back and scored a very good second goal and had a chance to win with a third goal."

On injuries to Mateo Kovacic and Hakim Ziyech: "I don't know. I should have subbed Mateo Kovacic at half-time so could have had one more change. I have not spoken to the doctor about Hakim and hope it is not serious. Today is Tuesday, there are a lot of days to recover until Sunday. We don't like to have that many injuries and more impact from the bench on a tactical matter. I hope they will be ready for Sunday."

On N'Golo Kante's performance: "I was very pleased today, it took him a while. He struggled in the last matches with his belief and intensity and game in general. It was good he stepped up today and you can instantly see the impact he makes. He is our game changer. He had a huge impact on the team."

    Action man.

Lukaku is a top player and when a top player finds themselves on the bench they look at themselves. He's proved he's a top player time and time again.

At the moment it's not working but he has notched a couple of goals recently in the World Club Cup. The manager may bring him back for Liverpool at the weekend - it's that kind of club where you have so many resources.

It's a good headache to have for the manager but it's one where he will think he's been proven right today.

Chelsea are not even firing on all cylinders and have won quite a few games where they've not been at their best but one loss in 19 is great by anyone's standards.

Tonight they were at seven or eight out of 10 but they've been below that and managed to win games. If they start performing to the levels people are capable of then nobody in this competition would want to come up against Thomas Tuchel's side. He will be looking towards a real charge towards the end of the season.

Villarreal have never lost a home knockout stage game in the Champions League, although five of those six matches ended level.

Juventus have failed to win any of their last seven first-leg matches in the Champions League knockout stage, since a 2-0 win vs Monaco in May 2017.

Chelsea forward Kai Havertz tells BT Sport: "We knew that it was a difficult game, they played good football and the first half was very difficult for us. Now it is half-time and the next game we have to win as well.

"I always give my best also in the Premier League, sometimes you have more luck, sometimes you don't and I help where I can.

"It is good for me (playing advanced forward). We have a lot of good strikers so it is also good to have a change and not make it easy for the opposition. Today it worked good and I enjoy every forward position.

"We did not play our best football, we could not get the aggressiveness of the last few weeks but we won 2-0 and that is the most important thing. Sunday is another competition and we have to focus on that now.

"It is crazy, we have a lot of chances to win another trophy on Sunday, it will be a tough game. We will put all our strength together and hope we win this game."

    Chelsea

    • Since Thomas Tuchel’s first game in charge in January last year, Chelsea have kept 39 clean sheets in all competitions, at least nine more than any other side within Europe’s big-five leagues (Sevilla and Man City both have 30).
    • Hakim Ziyech has been directly involved in 17 goals in his last 22 Champions League starts (8 goals, 9 assists), with the Moroccan involved in five goals in eight starts for Chelsea in the competition (3 goals, 2 assists).
    • No Chelsea player has more assists in all competitions in 2022 than N’Golo Kante (3, level with Mason Mount), with the Frenchman delivering as many assists this year as he managed in 2020 and 2021 combined (3 in 75 appearances).

Extremely solid, especially in the second half. They totally controlled the game and Thiago Silva was unbelievable - it does not seem like he is getting older one bit.

Kai Havertz, you have to give the manager credit for picking him and Havertz had one of his best games in a Chelsea shirt. N'Golo Kante was his world-class best. Lille didn't threaten enough and when they got close to the Chelsea goal ran into a brick wall.

It was a really accomplished performance from Chelsea. The clean sheet is huge at home. With the games they have to catch up in with the league it may allow them to rotate the squad even more.

It should've been more, that's the only disappointment that Thomas Tuchel will have, but you can't really moan about a 2-0 win in the last 16. Chelsea have been winning without playing their best and if some of these players start performing at the levels they're capable of then they could go on a long run.

Professional. Chelsea started like a house on fire, got possession, waited for Lille to open up and got them on the counter attack for the second.

Typical Chelsea, but I have been impressed with Lille, a young side and they will have a good go but Chelsea's defence is like a brick wall.

Job done, a clean sheet. Chelsea are like a basketball team that can turn it on and off when they want. There were some good performances and defensively they are looking very solid.
