Judith: The solution to today's debacle? Bring back James Vince into the England red-ball side: he is the best captain in the English game. And accept for Buttler and Bairstow their day is done.

  3. 'This is why we love Test cricket'published at 02:07 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2021

Australia captain Pat Cummins on BT Sport: "I was hoping and in the back of my mind I thought getting it done today would be a fantastic effort and then I brought Scotty Boland onto bowl - it was amazing. Packed crowds, which we haven't had for a while, it just hits home.

"It is amazing how well our debutants are doing and we've got Josh Hazlewood to come back at Sydney next week. I might be without a place! Scott has played almost 80 first-class games and you know what you're going to get from him.

"The last hour was just fun and it brings back memories of childhood. It is why we love Test cricket.

"Joe Root is batting fantastically - he has really stepped up and been a challenge for us. I have been really impressed with how we've batted and bowled - we've been really consistent and just done what we do best for long periods of time and that has paid dividends. I can't fault our guys."

  4. 'We can't hide behind any excuses'published at 02:05 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2021

England captain Joe Root, speaking to TMS: "It's very frustrating the way that we handled everything yesterday and the way we bowled and went about that was excellent, the best we've been all tour. We got ourselves into a position when we were in the Test match.

"Credit to the two opening bowlers last night, they got a wonderful spell of bowling and you've just got to find a way through it sometimes. Unfortunately we weren't able to stand up to that.

"It is very frustrating, we know we have to be better. We can't hide behind any excuses, there are clear areas we need to work on and we've got two opportunities with the last two Test matches and make sure we come away from this tour with something."

Adam Stocks: Didn’t expect much for the first session.. but didn’t expect a complete capitulation. Aussies better team. Root's captaincy will be rightly scrutinised but, the levels of quality he is working with should also be a point of discussion.

I would actually reduce the amount of County Championship cricket, but I would make sure they are played at the right time when the sun is out.

We are so obsessed with marketing and financing the game with white-ball cricket we have taken our eyes off red-ball cricket.

I am not a fan of reducing it because you have to play a lot of it to become good. If you want to become a big cricket player it is Test cricket you want to do well in.

It all goes back to, I think, to the preparation of our batsmen for playing Test cricket. The amount of one day cricket and where England play their Championship cricket has been a disaster.

You want to restore the Championship to being the spine of the season rather than being shunted to the extremities, you would be playing therefore in all sorts of conditions.

In case you're just joining us, yes England have lost. Yes, it was in the first session. Yes, it was by an innings.

  12. 'We do know our best team, but we had to make changes'published at 01:52 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2021

England head coach Chris Silverwood on BT Sport: "It is disappointing for us all - the lads will be feeling it. But I have to give credit to Australia, particularly Scott Boland on debut and Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc for their opening spell last night. We have to find a way to compete, score runs and push back against them. It is something we'll be reflecting on. We want to take something away from this series.

"We do have some world-class players in there and some youngsters who are learning on the job constantly. We have to give them confidence because we do back them and know they have ability.

"We do know who are our best 11 players are, but we had to make changes after the first two games. We knew we had good people to come in.

"We had disruption yesterday morning but the way the bowlers rallied was credit to them and the way we caught in that innings was good too. There is positives coming out of that."

  13. 'On a level field Australia are 15% better than England'published at 01:50 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2021

91Èȱ¬ cricket correspondent on 91Èȱ¬ Test Match Special

If everyone started off at the same level in terms of cricket played leading up to the series, I would imagine they [Australia] are about 15% better [than England]

Bowling-wise I don't think there's a huge amount of difference but we've only once had a full-strength attack and that is disappointing.

  15. 'It is gut-wrenching'published at 01:46 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2021

England captain Joe Root on BT Sport: "It is bitterly disappointing and gut-wrenching and everything you don't want from his stage of the tour. We have been thoroughly outplayed and credit to Australia.

"We have to make sure we come away from this tour with something we shout about. We know we have underperformed and have to mentally resilient and very strong. We have to give the people back home something to enjoy and celebrate."

Warringtini: We lost by an innings when the Aussies only scored 267 in their innings. Beyond embarrassing. Changes need to be made. Jimmy should just retire now, we don't deserve him.

More from Joe Root: "We've just got to do things for longer. There have been small pockets but nowhere near long enough to get yourself in a game and in a position to win a Test match.

"We know the areas we need to improve on and we have to look to get getting better and look to stay very strong and make sure we look at the next two games as an opportunity to take something from this series."

  19. 'Not sure England work on the right things'published at 01:36 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2021

    Moeen Ali
    England all-rounder on BT Sport

This has been coming - it wasn't that long ago I was in this side but it has been coming.

England struggle when they go away, and if Joe Root doesn't score runs they struggle to get even 200.

When we had Sir Alastair Cook and Joe Root we got away with it a bit more. You need that experience, techniques and the hard work in Test cricket.

I'm not sure we don't work hard enough, but I'm not sure we work on the right things often enough. We need to be shrewder with former players.

Still sitting here trying to take it all in. England were in no frame of mind to fight today, they had the stuffing knocked out of them yesterday and when Stokes got out the writing was very much on the wall.

That was a beaten team that came out and they were just swept away
