Snookered: Humiliating with the bat, awful in the field, shocking team selections, a terrible call at the Gabba toss, inexplicable field settings and a captain and coach unable to admit they have been wrong at any point. The series has been a disgraceful debacle.

It went from bad to absolutely embarrassing for England as Test debutant Scott Boland enjoyed a day he will never forget.

In front of his home crowd in Melbourne, Boland took the wickets of Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Mark Wood and Ollie Robinson...

Boland finished with an astonishing 6-7 in the second innings, from just four overs.

Where did it all go wrong? Who is to blame? Batters? The leadership? Coaching team? A lack of preparation?

Change must happen - but what does that mean? And how do we save further humiliation of a 5-0 thrashing?

Joe Root and Ben Stokes marched to the middle in Melbourne knowing they needed to dig in and produce something special to save the series. England were 31-4 and still trailing by 82 runs.

Well, where do I start?

When we went to bed last night, an England defeat on day three of the third Ashes Test looked probable. But not many of us predicted it to happen the way it did.

England were bowled out for a humiliating 68. Australia won by an innings and 14 runs and retained the Ashes.

It took just 81 minutes.

Let's take a look back at how it all unfolded.

I do think England should start to look towards the future now and prioritising that so people are better prepared for a couple of years time.

In the Championship you get batsmen defending half way up their stumps to 70mph bowlers, but to come down here and play you have to be able to play off the back foot, be proactive and sold in defence.

Rather than batting with a solid, simple defence and then expanding your game from there, because of white-ball cricket, players are encouraged to play their own game and work it out for themselves. That creates indecision in yourself as a cricketer and if you're doing that whilst playing international cricket it makes it ten times harder.

I would be surprised if Joe Root continues as captain.

I saw a very tired figure down there just now but it hasn't affected his batting which could be the one thing that keeps him going.

Hmmm. Joe Root is hardly talking like someone who intends to be captain of England beyond this Test series...

More from Joe Root, speaking to TMS: "My main focus and the groups focus is on the next ball, which is the first ball of the next Test.

"You can't start looking at things too far in the future. More than anything, we've got to make sure we end up coming away from this tour with something.

"We do not want to be stood there 5-0 at the end of the series. We've got two Test matches, a lot of World Test Championship points to play for, and we have to put some pride back into the badge and give the fans that are so loyal to us back home something to shout about and enjoy."

This team is a worse position than the one the white-ball team were in when they had a reset.

There is only Joe Root in this team that can bat for six hours - nobody else has managed. It goes back to where you learn the basics of the game - Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head both came over to England last year to play county cricket.

The jump and the gulf between that and playing Test cricket in Australia is huge.

Ben Stokes was the first wicket to fall to a brilliant Mitchell Starc delivery.

That left England 46-5 and they were quickly bowled out for a miserable 68, with debutant Scott Boland taking 6-7 from four overs and Cameron Green taking the final wicket.

It will start with individuals and they will be looking over their shoulders. There are careers on the line.

That is for another day though, it will be closer to Sydney.

From the minute England won the toss in Brisbane they haven't been good enough as a collective unit - it would be unfair to single out an individual.

The two teams are close but there has been a massive gap in performance.

England captain Joe Root, speaking to TMS: "I look at this squad of players as being the best 18 red-ball players that are in our county system.

"If we want to talk about the set up and the structure below then that is a longer conversation for another time.

"The fact is we have 18 players here playing for England and they’ve got a responsibility. We’ve all got a responsibility to be better than what we have been so far and we’ve got two games to show just that and put some pride back in to the badge and give something for the fans back home to cheer about and show how much we care about playing for our country."

"Without no games to back them up, the best we can do is get players in the nets. It is a difficult thing to do. That's the way it is in this day and age.

"I have to give credit to the bowlers. To do what they did and perform at the level they did yesterday was excellent."

The format of this tour must not be seen as some sort of blueprint for going forward in which there is no opportunity for players to get some practice.

You have to have opportunities for players who aren't playing to get some practice, and for those who are playing who are out of form, to get into some sort of form because it's pointless to roll up once a week and get rolled over by the same team and lose 5-0.
