As I Consider ...

In spite of all that has been said about Wind Farms and if they are going to meet the demand for clean electricity by 2010 and 2020 without this country having to rely also on Nuclear Power. Work has started recently on a further offshore farm in the Solway Firth. This type of project seems to be on the increase, the whole idea being satisfactory if we are not to overindulge in introducing too many turbines to the landscape.
It appears, from what we are led to believe that power from wind comes to us at a lower cost than its opposite Nuclear Power in spite of the visual difficulty regarding too many turbines. Nuclear Power appers to be exceedingly more expensive to get it up and running and then again decommissioning not really that many years later.
I know also, as was to my own leaning, that anything referred to as nuclear was full of doubts, and some fears still remain. I can, alhtough, understand the need to be realistic in this so called "new age."
This is not about five decades ago when Nuclear Power was in its infancy and near accidents did happen. But now I must admit that exceeding care is being taken in the more advanced counteries. Really, the scientists and the experts are people who approach their intricate duties not in a haphazard way but conscious of complete saefty.
I feel more confident now having given both forms of energy due consideration, that the combined sources of energy wind turbine and nuclear might be the answer to extreme environmental problem. That is if humanity is aware of this express need.

Tell us about the proposal for a turbine on Tiree - it would be nice to read some facts.

Greg from Glasgow

Greg from Glasgow, All I can tell you about the Tiree turbine at the moment is that a test mast is in place. Imight have more for you later.

As you are someone who writes about this issue quite a lot its a bit odd that you don't seem to have any details. Are members of the Tiree Community being kept informed?

Greg from Glasgow

Sorry not to get back to you. I made a comment a couple of days ago but it seems not to have been posted for some reason. I expect both comments will appear.....or not.....its very slow this islandblogging. Anyway, I was surprised that you don't seem to have any details of the Tiree proposal already. Is the Tiree community being kept informed?

I agree with the need to find alternative, preferably renewable, sources of energy. Windpower is an option, but perhaps best if harvested offshore. Onshore has too much of an impact (see Lewis windfarms) if done in too great a number. Nuclear power has one major disadvantage: its waste will continue to haunt us for thousands of years.

Wind farms have their disadvantages. The turbines require much maintenence and they can be very noisy. They are still better than nuclear and oil. I worked in solar cell research and development for several years. I think that is the best answer to electrical energy problems. We were making solar panels that produced electrical power at a cost comparable to nuclear or oil. That was twenty years ago. Big oil put a stop on our research and development project. Of course solar requires lots of sunlight which northern Scotland is kind of short on. I'm glad to hear Scotland and other countries are seriously pursuing alternate energy. The US isn't...regardless of all the political noise you hear to the contrary.

Islay has a wave generator and I had assumed somewhere like the Butt of Lewis could do something similar but I was talking to some Islay lads and they weren't saying that wouldn't be feasible... shame, as they're less obstructive than wind turbines (which I happen to think look quite stunning but no-one seems to agree with me).

Buzz from Glasgow

Tiree has been fully informed about land based community turbine, however Crown Estate seem to have forgotten to inform us of proposed offshore wind turbine project which sounds like 200 to 400 turbines off Tiree's coastline. Please read today's scotsman or herald for further details
