The Tillingbourne valley is fed by springs on the northern side of Leith Hill in Surrey. It runs west for little more than 10 miles until it reaches the River Wey. And for most of its length you could jump across it - with a bit of a run up! Although today it is archetypal peaceful, leafy Surrey scenery this was certainly not always the case.
The challenge:
Find two fiery bangs, now silenced, and a silent fire still growing in this landscape.

The landscape detectives in this programme are geographer, Ian Mercer and ecologist, Paul Evans.
