CROWD CONTROL
How is psychology used to control crowds?Ìý Dr Raj Persaud talks to Inspector Bob Hughes during his visit to the Metropolitan Police's Public Order Unit to find out how the riot police are trained psychologically to prevent and deal with rowdy and violent behaviour.
Raj Persaud is joined by , Professor of Social Psychology at the to further discuss the psychology of crowd control.
RONALD DAVID LAING (1927 – 1989)
Ronald Laing is one of the most famous psychiatrists of the twentieth century.Ìý He argued passionately that much mental illness wasn't actually real and that psychiatric diagnosis was instead a way for the establishment to control us.
Ronald Laing’s papers are being catalogued at .Ìý Ian Carthy, a Medical Historian at the University’s library is currently writing a PhD on Laing, much of which is based on unpublished writings which have turned up during the archiving process.
Dr Raj Persaud reviews Laing's work and legacy with Ian Carthy and Dr Leon Redler, a psychotherapist who was a long term colleague of Laing's.

Dr Persaud visits The near Southampton to find out how they treat alcohol abuse.Ìý
Althought The Priory is best known as the place where the rich and famous go to dry out and come off drugs, most people who are treated there are members of the public, some of whom are funded by the NHS.
Raj Persaud meets Dr Austin Tate, the hospital's Clinical Director and speaks to Andy Mayer, a recovered alcoholic who was treated in The Priory.
