Kamala Devam
South Asian Preliminary Round Judge
Kamala is a London-based, multi-lingual dance artist, choreographing, performing and teaching in the UK and US. Kamala trained in Bharata Natyam for thirteen years with Kalakshetra graduates Katherine and K.P. Kunhiraman and after discovering contemporary dance, received her B.A. degree at San Francisco State University in 2001. She has performed Bharata Natyam professionally in Malaysia, India and the UK, and toured the US and Mexico with California Contemporary Dancers.
In the UK, Kamala has performed for the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony with Akram Khan Company, toured with Shobana Jeyasingh Dance and worked with many independent choreographers. She has collaborated with Seeta Patel on their multi-award-winning dance film The Art of Defining Me (2013) and toured their duet and her own solo dance pieces throughout the UK and US. Kamala is a commissioned choreographer for university and youth dance companies in the US and UK.
Current commissions include; San Francisco State University’s Dance Theater and Akademi South Asian Dance UK.
