Doris Salcedo’s Palimpsest
Colombian sculptor Doris Salcedo’s latest work marks the lives of those who died in perilous sea crossings seeking a better life in Europe. Names of the dead are written in specially crafted stone and through them appear water droplets that merge to reveal the names of other victims. The effect is that the stone appears to weep the names of those who died.
