Dungeons of death
The car park of Studland Nature Reserve may not look like an ideal place to see wildlife, but Chris Packham finds a diabolical insect there. All around him insects are digging burrows - dungeons of death. These are bee-killer wasps. It is a solitary wasp, so doesn't build a paper nest. They are after meat. They catch a particular type of bee, paralyse them and carry them back to their burrow. They don't kill their prey - this is living food for their offspring. The wasp will lay its egg on it and seal up the burrow to prevent another wasp pinching it or laying its own egg on it.
