Wood Lane reserve near Ellesmere is a hotspot for sand martins. You don't get a more impressive colonial nesting site in Britain than this. There are over 200 pairs of sand martins nesting on the cliff face. Many people get confused between sand martins and house martins. House martins are a bit bigger and chunkier, and are pied - black and white. They also have a white backside. Sand martins are a bit slimmer, nicely brown on the back, paler in front, with a bar across their chest.
