Salmon or trout?

Electro-fishing is a harmless way to find out what lives in a river as it does not harm the fish. Chris Packham is shown a catch by Arthur and Lionel of the Loughs Agency. There are some young salmon and trout. You can tell them apart because the salmon has large pectoral fins since they feed in faster flowing water than the trout. The salmon also don't have any spots below the lateral line, unlike the much spottier brown trout. All salmonids have an adipose fin. The trout's is orange-red and the salmon's is transparent. Salmon were so common in this part of Ireland that they were once referred to as 'poor man's fish' and fed to pigs.
