Having arrived in the UK from the Philippines just two and a half months ago, Francis is facing up to a double challenge – making a career in the NHS and a new life 7,000 miles from home. Senior mentor Beverley is worried that homesickness and his struggles in a second language could cause him to leave. Beverley endeavours to keep a close eye on Francis to ensure his emotions are kept in check, especially when he is asked to make a difficult phone call to a dying patient’s relatives.

In the emergency department, Katie has taken student life in her stride, but now she is struggling to get signed off on two of her key nursing competencies, and mentor Taz is worried it could be enough to make her think about leaving.
