Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Ruth Scott Anglican Priest and Quaker:

Years ago, when we lived in a rural parish, a wonderfully eccentric American couple moved into the vast and dilapidated old rectory next door. Within a few months they鈥檇 completely cleared the overgrown acres of their back garden. In the parish magazine we informed readers that they had put in for planning permission to build breeding pens for the North American skunk which they hoped to release into the wild here. Despite it being the April edition of the magazine, you鈥檇 be surprised how many people were taken in by this fake news foolery, and were up in arms about it. Fake news has received significant attention in recent times, and it raises interesting questions about the nature of truth. In a favourite holiday haunt of my children, King Arthur鈥檚 Caverns in Wales, we travelled underground and through the waterfall to hear the legends of King Arthur, and the voice of the poet told us, 鈥淎 story doesn鈥檛 have to be true to be true.鈥 It鈥檚 a truth we easily lose sight of today when we define truth simply as scientific fact. Back in his own time Jesus was renowned for telling parables. These stories had no historical basis in terms of having happened at one point in time, but they captured the truth of human experience in all times and places, which is why we continue to tell them today. And if I tell you that my beloved husband, Chris is my harbour and my home-coming, you know he鈥檚 not a strong stone wall or fire-side hearth, but you鈥檒l have a deeper sense of my love for him than if I tell you he鈥檚 5鈥8鈥 tall, has grey hair, and walks with a slight stoop. The facts don鈥檛 convey what matters most. Chris鈥 favourite definition of a myth is that it鈥檚 a story about something that never was, but always is. Without being historically true such things as parables, myths and poetry can help us understand the deep and universal truths of human experience. Unlike fake news which hides the truth, they take us to the very heart of it.
