Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:

Yesterday was International Women’s Day. Some might find it strange that we need a day dedicated to 50% of the world’s population but when our parliament has to have an inquiry into the fact that women are being told to wear high-heeled shoes and dye their hair blonde just to retain their jobs, I feel it is safe to say that we still need this special day, which was marked in a variety of ways across the world.

Yesterday’s theme was “Be Bold For Change”—it encouraged people to take action to speed up the pace of change, because at our current trajectory--it will take over 170 years for us to reach gender equity.

Organisers called on all people – regardless of their gender—to join forces, to seek change at the highest levels of society, and the deepest levels of our families.

Yesterday’s events—global gatherings, conferences, awards, exhibitions, festivals, fun runs, corporate events, concert performances, online digital gatherings, even strikes—were described as a “purposeful collaboration”. And men were to be seen at the events alongside women. Which for me is incredibly important and reminds me of the Qur’anic call for men and women to be “the protecting friends of one another”. Rights are not a competition. There has to be mutual care and support.

The Qur’an also describes men and women as garments for one another. A garment beautifies, and protects, so too the Qur’anic narrative seeks to present a vision of the world where men and women support and help one another, where we recognise that men and women each have unique struggles and face their own types of injustices, and we need to help each other through them.

I pray for a world where we don’t need a day to be highlighting the injustices and problems that either gender faces. I hope we can recognise that we’re all human beings who should be caring for each other. However, until the reality matches the ideal, until we don’t get defined by our gender but by our skills, until we can exist equitably, then I am glad there is a day that helps us all reflect.
