Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Julia Neuberger, Senior Rabbi at the west London Synagogue:

Last Saturday morning, there was a 鈥榝irst鈥 at my synagogue, a double bat mitzvah. Now it鈥檚 not unusual to have, say, twin sisters or brothers sharing a bar (for boys)聽 or bat (for girls) mitzvah. But this was an 83 year old grandmother and her 23 year old grand-daughter- the first time. The grandmother had grown up orthodox, where girls had had no ceremony at all to mark the maturation process from childhood to adolescence. She had joined our synagogue when she married, and became involved in absolutely everything. But she still hadn鈥檛 had what most of our girls- and boys- would consider entirely normal. So, given the 鈥榤easure of man鈥檚 days is 3 score years and ten鈥, as the Psalmist says, on reaching the age for a second bat mitzvah she decided to go for it. Alongside her was her granddaughter who had simply felt very anti about Judaism, and many other things, at 13 and hadn鈥檛 done it either. So, ten years, late, she too read from the Torah and gave the most moving explanation of how she now felt connected to Jewish values once again. After almost everyone had shed a tear or two, I asked the congregation to put up their hands if they had not had bar or bat mitzvah. A surprising number, men as well as women, had missed out, because of war and evacuation, because they鈥檇 been desperate refugees, or whatever. And so the rabbis are making a list. I鈥檓 very much hoping our 鈥榝irst鈥 grandmother and granddaughter bat mitzvah won鈥檛 be the last- in that combination and others- so that everyone has the chance to read from Torah, to learn that skill, to address the congregation about what it means to them, and to show that you can have what is in fact a maturation ceremony at any age- and it still has meaning. That must be true for all of us- it is never too late to learn and say what it means to you in front of others , even if you missed out on it as a child!
