Pause For Thought
It’s happened to most of us, hands still wet from the washing up, we drop that precious mug or plate and it smashes on the kitchen floor, never to be repaired, fit only for the kitchen bin. Imagine then the horror for one family who when they visited an Ipswich museum last year with their 5 year old had a bit of an accident. The little lad knocked an 18thcentury Delftware pottery ‘puzzle jug’ from its position on a window ledge. The jug smashed into around 65 pieces, some of them very tiny indeed. The parents embarrassed and the little boy devastated, they could only apologise and leave the broken pieces behind them
A year later, lots of hard work and no doubt a ton of glue, the jug is fixed and the museum, keen to share the good news, put out an appeal to find the boy and his family and reassure them all was well. They found them. The family wished to remain anonymous but were pleased the jug was fixed and promised to be more careful next time.
Like the broken jug we all bear our own scars from mishaps and misadventures some of which have been easier and quicker to repair than others, our own cracks and faults. It doesn’t mean that we are useless or ugly, beyond repair and only fit for the bin.Ìý Acknowledging our weaknesses and flaws allows others space and freedom to acknowledge their own. And like the museum’s broken jug our scars show that we have a bit of an interesting story to tell.
The song writer Leonard Cohen said ‘There is a crack, a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in’, perfection is an unobtainable ideal but acknowledgment of our own flaws reminds us of our shared humanity and that strength can be made perfect in weakness. And despite the damage, sometimes the cracks themselves hold a kind of beauty. So Sara, I may be a bit of a cracked pot, but like anyone else, I’m a cracked pot with a story or two, to tell.
