Pause For Thought
I remember this day 30 years ago as if it were yesterday.
On the 13th July 1985 Bob Geldof and Midge Ure helped organise 16 hours of live music featuring some of the greatest bands in the world. They staged magnificent live shows simultaneously in Wembley stadium London and JFK stadium Philadelphia. It was watched by one a half billion viewers in 160 countries, eventually raising over 100 million pounds to help feed starving people in Africa.
It all began when 91热爆 reporter Michael Buerk filmed a catastrophic drought related famine in Ethiopia. The sight of starving people, especially hungry children, cried out for action.
Bob Geldof and Midge Ure used their popstar status to do something practical. They persuaded major stars to record their song 鈥淒o They Know It鈥檚 Christmas鈥 in October 1984. It became the Christmas No1 and sold 3 million copies. During the recording, singer Boy George suggested they do a massive live show too. Geldof and Ure took up the idea and headed a team of organisers who produced the historic Live Aid which, to this day, proves the power good people possess.
听I still remember the thrill of Status Quo opening the day with Rocking All over the World. The Beach Boys answered with California Girl in Philadelphia and so it went on. U2, then a young band, stunned us with their energy. Queen and Freddie Mercury were magic, ending with We Are the Champions.
As usual the day had its critics. Is this the best way to help struggling people they asked.
听The man whose film gave birth to it all put it best. 鈥淭he money raised saved about 2 million lives,鈥 Michael Buerck reported. 鈥淟ive Aid made a terrific difference; Public opinion forced governments to change their policies.鈥
Countless lives were changed forever. We discovered that charity has to be practical, tears are never enough.
When Bob Geldof shouted: 鈥淚f there鈥檚 a problem, you go out and solve it鈥 he became a modern prophet doing what Jesus commanded us to do: 鈥渇eed the hungry, clothe the naked, and love your neighbour.鈥澨
