Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Hanging on the wall in the Vicarage is an 18th C portrait of one of my predecessors, the Revd. Sir John Dolben, Baronet, Vicar, Squire of Finedon. He looked good in a wig, was rather a dear, you can tell from his portrait, and also from his instructions when he died in 1756 that his body be left to medical science ‘in order to prevent my dear children from being distressed by the sore Distempers with which I have been afflicted’.

The Revd Sir John’s dissected remains, having yielded their mysteries, were eventually laid to rest in my church where yesterday Finedon turned out for another funeral, that of our old GP Mike, who lived over the road and took care of generations of my parishioners.

Clerical and medical matters often overlap, and I thought of our related responsibilities, the care of our community, being keepers of its most intimate secrets, having the cure of its bodies and souls, no less in the 21st C than the 18th. And today that relationship continues, Mike’s son Charles, following in his father’s footsteps. He’s my GP.

In the old days, both were seen as providers of essential services, and not long after the Revd Sir John was dissected, another of my predecessors had the poor of the parish vaccinated against smallpox (for £31.10s).  Now, however, it is to the doctor’s surgery rather than the Vicarage door that the people flock. Medical science has got so good at curing people, and souls so faintly elusive, that parsons, unlike doctors, are the wallflowers of community care.

And of course, like you, I would much rather take my ingrowing toenail to the surgery rather than the vestry, but there is an end to science’s art and skill, for ultimately all our care pathways arrive at the same clinical outcome.

Time of Death, the medic calls it. Time for Life, the parson replies, that lies on the far side of our sore Distempers and unclenching hearts and closing-down minds, and rises like the dawn after darkest night.
