Last night Annie saw her abusive husband Sandy for the first time in years. Horrified and frightened, she sets about getting the hell out of Shieldinch. When Annie goes to get her wages from Raymond she meets Sandy in the pub. He reassures her that he's a changed man and that it's probably best if they keep their past a secret. Maybe he has turned over a new leaf? Annie then bangs into Charlie and broaches the subject of getting a place of their own, Charlie's loved up reaction cements Annie's decision. She's staying put.

As Annie sets about finding a divorce lawyer, Sandy breaks his word and reveals their secret to Eileen, Charlie and Zinnie. Sandy manages to convince Eileen that his being there is a coincidence and also hints that the breakdown of his marriage was as a result of Annie having mental health issues. Charlie confronts Annie and the pair row. He is hurt that she didn't tell him about Sandy. Charlie storms off leaving Annie to stew. Annie is then so shocked when she sees Sandy in the street that she falls over. When Sandy insists he takes her to see the doctor, Annie knows there's no way she can get out of it. It's clear Sandy has returned to his manipulative and threatening ways and, when alone with Dr Brodie, Annie lies about how she has received her various past injuries.

To make up with Charlie, Annie offers to cook a special meal. Sandy isn't happy when he discovers the couple are back on track. He sneaks into Annie's house, slashes one of Charlie's shirts and leaves an orchid as a message for Annie. Annie is freaked out when she discovers this and immediately starts packing her bags. Charlie returns for his special meal to find Annie frantic. She tells him she is leaving and asks him to come. Charlie doesn't understand what's happening and the couple row again. Unable to convince Charlie to leave with her, Annie deliberately hurts him so he won't want her to stay. Annie then resumes her packing and is relieved when she thinks Charlie has returned to make up. Only it's not Charlie, it's Sandy. He tells Annie that she's leaving with him. Annie tries to placate Sandy but things turn nasty and he locks her in the kitchen. A struggle ensues and Sandy falls over, banging his head. Annie runs to the pub for help but a wounded Charlie is not keen to listen to her. Sandy arrives and claims that Annie attacked him. Confronted by the community, Annie finally finds the strength to speak out about Sandy's abuse. The community believe Annie and send Sandy packing.

Elsewhere, Leo brings Joanne in to help with the arcade's paperwork but Joanne would rather spend her time making Gabriel jealous and finding ways to spend Leo's compensation cash. Joanne realises that Gabriel is getting in the way of her access to Leo's money so sets about getting between the brothers. Joanne tells Leo that she thinks Gabriel still has feelings for her. Leo isn't sure but starts watching his brother carefully. However, Joanne is in for a shock when she discovers that Leo put all his compensation into the arcade, he's got no cash left for holidays or treats for Joanne. The straw to break the camel's back is when Joanne is left with egg on her face following an attempt to stitch up Gabriel. Now she's out for revenge as well as cash and there's one man in town who can serve up both - Lenny Murdoch.

Zinnie is down in the dumps following another snub from her parents. She and Leyla have a heart to heart which boosts Zinnie's spirits and she even offers to babysit. Meanwhile, Conor ropes Adeeb into his plans to dog school and go to a party that night. The pair secure some booze and leave a message for Michael and Leyla posing as a friend's father. The boys are discovered, 'grounded for life' and left in Zinnie's care while Michael and Leyla head out. Unfortunately, Zinnie's idea of family harmony goes awry when Nicole heads off with her friends and the boys lay into vodka while Zinnie is in the bath. Michael and Leyla return to find the boys drunk. Michael comes down hard on the boys but even harder on Zinnie. Furious at Michael's attitude towards her, it's clear Zinnie won't this lying down.
