11 unforgettable pop videos from the 90s

Guess who's been round for breakfast? Queen of country and five time Grammy winner Shania Twain joined for an exclusive play of her brand new single. It's hot off the press from her fifth album; her first since 2002!

It's been 20 years since Shania first hit the UK charts and her sound has moved on from the days of her unforgettable anthem, That Don't Impress Me Much.

The video for the song is unmistakably 90s and Shania's leopard-print cape, bra and leggings combo is a flashback to an unforgettable era of music videos. Here are 11 videos that will instantly whisk you to an era of pop and music videos unlike any other...

Shania Twain - That Don't Impress Me Much

Pop met country on Shania Twain's 1998 hit single, That Don't Impress Me Much.

The video is perhaps best memorable for how unsuitable her outfit was for hitch-hiking in the desert. We never learned what was inside the leopard-print hat-box, but we'd hazard a guess that it was probably more leopard-print.

She never picked up a lift (due to her high standards) but we know she got home safe; after all, she's been in at Radio 2 this week.

TLC - Waterfalls

Warning: Video contains adult themes

TLC's 1995 video leaves an impression both visually and emotionally.

The image of the three-piece performing in the middle of an ocean is instantly recognisable, but it was the strong message of the video (and song) that the video was celebrated for.

It carries two storylines, about drugs and HIV, which helped establish TLC as one of the most socially conscious pop groups of the 90s.

Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity

The most memorable video in Jamiroquai's history sees frontman Jay Kay strut his stuff in a studio with a moving floor.

All while wearing a massive hat, of course.

The video remains impressive to this day, due to a simple concept and expert execution from the director, Jonathan Glazer, to the star himself.

Alanis Morrisette - Ironic

The Canadian star's 1996 video is one of pop music's memorable car journeys as four distinct different personalities take turns to sing parts of the song. We say; four times the Alanis Morrisette, four times the better.

And, (SPOILER!), the big reveal comes at the end when it's revealed that there was only ever one Alanis in the car, and her passengers were manifestations of her personality. The shock ending still thrills us now, as much as it ever did.

Spice Girls - Wannabe

Name a more iconic staircase in the history of pop. It's OK, we'll wait.

Spice Girls' Wannabe video was originally intended to be filmed in Barcelona, but in the end was shot in one take in what is now a landmark London Hotel on a cold April night.

But unseasonably cold weather wasn't going to stop Sporty Spice performing back flips on the table of a hearty meal, Posh and Baby getting their shimmy on on the dance floor, and Ginger and Scary Spices asking us what we really really want? We want to watch this video again!

Britney Spears - ...Baby One More Time

Why the school, why the uniform? The idea for Britney's first ever video came from the star herself.

The video for ...Baby One More Time was originally planned to be set in a cartoon, but Britney wanted a school setting, so it would relate to the lives of her young fans. Or so the story goes.

The idea worked, a legend was born and 19 years later, Britney is still one of the best-known stars on the planet.

B*Witched - C'est La Vie

You probably remember this one because of the denim but watch it today and - no, it's still all about the denim.

But, second to the outfits are the Irish jigs, the roly-polys and the taunting of the poor chap cast to be the object of B*Witched's affections.

Love it or hate it, you're certainly never going to forget it, that's for sure.

Robson & Jerome - Unchained Melody

(Warning: Third party video may contain adverts)

Robson & Jerome wanted so much to be living in the 50s in their debut video, but somehow that only makes Unchained Melody seem even more 90s.

Fresh from the success of Soldier Soldier, the TV duo managed to clear an entire theatre with their ballad in the video, but this was far from the reality of their real-life success.

They sold millions of copies of their two albums and for a brief period in the mid-90s were one of the biggest pop acts in the UK.

Michael Jackson - Scream

(Warning: Third party video may contain adverts)

Michael and Janet's fierce 1995 video was set in a spaceship because why not? It's the Jacksons.

Shot in black and white, the siblings strutted, shimmied and yes, moon-walked around a deserted ship dressed in spiky rubber suits. The choreography was on point.

Scream cost $7 million to make and holds up remarkably well 22 years later.

Toni Braxton - Unbreak My Heart

(Warning: Third party video may contain adverts)

Do you know what's missing most from modern pop videos? Drama. The video for Toni Braxton's iconic 1996 ballad opens with a road traffic accident, before focusing on the singer's grief as she reminisces about her dead boyfriend.

So, nothing too heavy or hard-hitting then :(

Backstreet Boys - I Want It That Way

(Warning: Third party video may contain adverts)

The white suits, the emoting, the pointing at the camera - Backstreet Boys set the template for all boyband videos with their 1999 video for I Want It That Way.

It was set in an airport and closed with the boys departing a crowd of screaming fans and heading towards a jet emblazoned with their own logo. These days, most boybands fly in economy.
