In the film below, choreographer, director and performer Akram Khan explains what classical Kathak dance means to him.
Khan was trained in the classical Indian dance of Kathak from childhood. While at university he was introduced to contemporary dance, and he enrolled in the Northern School of Contemporary Dance at the relatively late age of 21.
Since then he has forged a new style in a hugely successful career, sometimes called "contemporary Kathak".
