91热爆 ONE Winter
Supervolcano

91热爆 ONE - Winter highlights 2005

Introduction - Supervolcano erupts on 91热爆 ONE this winter

Supervolcano sets fire to a 拢178m season where science, history, literary adaptation and natural history join comedy and drama in the heart of peak time

Supervolcano is a true story - it just hasn't happened yet. Set in the near future, this factually based drama charts the possible consequences of one of nature's most cataclysmic events.

Using specially commissioned research from several major scientific bodies, studies of previous supervolcanic eruptions and predictions drawn from a range of scientific disciplines, Supervolcano details what could happen if Yellowstone were to erupt again.

Although there are several supervolcanoes around the world, only the one beneath Yellowstone National Park in the USA is currently active.

Unlike ordinary volcanoes, supervolcanoes are not obvious from the surface.

Volcanologists believe it is only a matter of time before the molten magna contained within its chamber will burst out.

When supervolcanoes erupt they do so with a force thousands of times greater than eruptions such as that at Mount Vesuvius.

Supervolcano will be accompanied by a two part documentary running on 91热爆 TWO. The Science Behind Supervolcano explores the cutting edge scientific research that informs the drama and features experts who monitor the behaviour of supervolcanos around the world.

Ancient history is back this season with Genghis Khan. Today his name is synonymous with evil, yet in his lifetime he was a hero.

Was he a brutal monster or a visionary who transformed his country?

Filmed on location in Mongolia, this film looks at the legend behind the man.

Lorraine Heggessey, Controller 91热爆 ONE, said: "91热爆 ONE continues to blaze a trail using innovative production techniques to bring specialist documentary subjects alive for a wide mainstream audience.

"We are constantly broadening the range of programmes in peak time to inform audiences about the natural, scientific and historical world."

This season 91热爆 ONE launches a range of new dramas featuring highlights:

Daniel Craig stars in a major adaptation of Robert Harris' compelling bestseller, Archangel.

Adapted by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, Archangel follows Oxford historian Fluke Kelso on a dangerous and thrilling race to uncover the dark mystery behind the alleged secret diaries of Josef Stalin.

Sarah Lancashire and Timothy Spall star in Cherished, the true story of Angela Cannings, the mother wrongly convicted of killing two of her babies.

Angela was eventually released following new evidence of a genetic predisposition to cot death in her family which came to light as part of a 91热爆 investigation by John Sweeney.

Faith is William Ivory's moving and passionate story of two sisters' struggle for survival during the year long conflict between the Thatcher government and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) which began in March 1984. Starring Maxine Peake and Christine Tremarco.

Adapted from Meera Syal's acclaimed novel, Life Isn't All Ha Ha Hee Hee follows Tania, Sunita and Chila, who have been close and somewhat unlikely friends since their schooldays, as they navigate their way through the emotional roller-coaster of their thirties - the time when the real growing up is done.

Acclaimed actor Christopher Eccleston hits our screens this winter as Doctor Who with Billie Piper as the Doctor's companion Rose Tyler. More details will be released early next year.

Set in 19th century London, Fingersmith is the story of a con man, Rivers, who embarks on the most ambitious scam of his career.

Adapted from Sarah Waters' Booker nominated novel, it stars Imelda Staunton, Charles Dance and Rupert Evans.

Other factual highlights this winter include:

In 1991 two climbers discovered the perfectly preserved body of a 5,300 year old man. The Iceman Murder uses hi-tech scientific research, forensic investigative methods and multiple storyline dramatic reconstruction to build a picture of the world of the man they have called Otzi.

The story of evolution is brought to life on screen for us as Steve Leonard learns how we are related to all 30 million species on earth in Journey Of Life.

From the poll tax riots to fuel protests, from demonstrations against the transportation of live animals to the fight for fathers' rights, People Power explores what motivates everyday people to stop watching the news and start making it.

The Adventures of Robert Louis Stevenson explores the life and work of the world famous author behind 91热爆 ONE's new Sunday family drama Kidnapped.

Kidnapped stars Iain Glen and Paul McGann in the tale of two men who escape murder and shipwreck on a quest for justice in 1760s Scotland.

Soprano Lesley Garrett presents a drama-documentary that recreates the atmosphere of the 19th century waltz and looks at the work of Johann Strauss, Vienna's Waltz King.

Adrian is 13. Grandchild Of The Holocaust is his journey to discover the truth of what happened to his grandmother, Rene, during her four-year incarceration in Auschwitz and Belsen.*

From big hair and beyond in entertainment this season:

This season 91热爆 ONE launches a brand new sitcom from My Family creator, Fred Barron.

Also starring Greg Wise, Raquel Cassidy and Zita Sattar.

91热爆 ONE celebrates the 10th Comic Relief Red Nose Day on March 11 2005.

Since its launch Comic Relief has raised over 拢310m for projects in both Africa and here in the UK.

This year is about big hair and beyond - changing the way you look for a day to transform someone else's life forever.

In a television career that has spanned 98 shows, 12 series, Christmas specials and 30 years in the business, Ronnie Corbett and Ronnie Barker have entertained millions with their inimitable brand of humour.
