PLAYER,
John
Business
- Cigarettes
In 1877 John
Player, the son of a solicitor, took over a tobacconist's in Broad
Marsh, where he conceived the idea of selling pre-packed and labelled
tobacco. By 1881 additional land had to be bought at Radford so three
new factory blocks could be built. Less than a hundred years later
(1972), Player's was making a third of Britain's cigarettes. Today
the old "lace factory" on the Radford site is dwarfed by
the branch's modern factories.
