Fred Karno was
the stage name of Frederick John Westcott, son of a cabinet maker
who lived and worked in several towns before settling in Coalpit Lane,
Nottingham. He was an entertainer and used to busk at the lock near
Hampton Court at weekends. He rose through flair and persistence to
be one of the greatest showmen in the world. He made his fame and
fortune from Fred Karno's Circus and music hall impresario. His list
of recruits to his troupe include Sir Charlie Chaplin, Stan Laurel,
Will Hay and Max Miller.

Jawaid Khaliq,
from The Meadows, outpointed the holder Willie Wise, of New York,
to claim the IBO World Welterweight title at the city's Harvey Hadden
Centre on Monday 11th June 2001.
A taxi driver by day, Jawaid has entered the professional arena relatively
late on in life - He debuted in 1997.
As of 12th June 2001 his career record stands as follows:

Laura Johnson
attended Nottingham School of Art in 1880. She was a fatherless child
who wore hand-me-down clothes and shoes with holes in them. She is
best known for her coastal scenes and later her circus paintings,
involving gypsy, ballet dancing and circus imagery.She was the first
woman to be elected R.A. in 1936.
