A Fothergill design

1841-1928
FOTHERGILL, Watson

Designer - Architect

Is it Fothergill Watson or Watson Fothergill. The answer is both since he changed his name once he had established his reputation. Fothergill was the son of a wealthy lace manufacturer and merchant. His family moved to Nottingham in 1852 but it was not until he was 21 that his professional career began to take off. He developed a distinctive picturesque style, influenced by the European Gothic architecture he saw on his many visits to the continent. He became known as Nottingham's most flamboyant Victorian architect. There are many of his buildings dotted around the City Centre, including banks, pubs, office buildings and shops.

Key Achievements: Having a positive effect on Nottingham's cityscape.
