Constituency Profile

This constituency takes in the centre of the Welsh capital and residential areas in the east and north-east of the city.

It contains many of Cardiff's most recognisable landmarks, including the Principality Stadium and Cardiff Castle. It's also home to a large student population, giving it a different demographic profile to most Welsh constituencies. Only 10.6% of the population are aged over 65. In the National Assembly the seat was held by the Liberal Democrats until 2011 when it was narrowly won by Jenny Rathbone for Labour.

In 2011, Labour had a 37.9% share of the vote over the Liberal Democrats on 37.7%. The Conservatives had 15.1% and Plaid Cymru 7.2%.
