  8. Newcastle Covid hub 'can cope with demand'published at 15:52 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2021

Newcastle's Centre for Life Covid vaccination centre says it can cope with government plans to offer boosters to over-18s before the end of the month.

The government says every adult can expect to be offered a chance to get boosted by the end of December - a month sooner than previously planned, to try to slow the spread of the Omicron variant.

Allison Heathcote, a matron at the vaccination hub, said: "It's always something we've expected, change has become the norm, so it is something we're always pre-empting.

"We need to be prepared and we have several centres and we all work well with pre-planning and trying to predict what's next."

The number of daily Covid vaccinations in the North East will need to double if all adults are to be offered a booster by the end of the month.

More than 130,000 jabs will need to be given out daily, up from 61,000 at the moment.

People faced long waits for appointments on Monday, prompting health bosses to warn people not to turn up to walk-in clinics but to arrange appointments in advance.

Volunteers who helped with previous vaccine rollouts are being approached again while it is understood the Army will also be used.

Opening hours for vaccine centres will be extended and pop-up clinics will also be set up in order to boost capacity by 50% this week and by 100% soon after.

Dr George Rae, a North Tyneside GP and the British Medical Association鈥檚 regional chairman, urged everyone to get a booster to help fight off the Omicron variant.

鈥淚f you have only had the first two doses of the vaccine, then your protection is around 30-40%. If you have had the booster, that goes up to 70-75% protection against getting a mild disease and certainly against getting a more severe outcome.鈥

A North East Labour MP says she will join a Conservative rebellion in a House of Commons vote later on a set of measures for England aimed at slowing the spread of the Omicron variant.

While an estimated 70 Tory MPs are expected to vote against the government on the planned introduction of mandatory Covid passes, the measures are expected to pass with Labour鈥檚 backing.

But Emma Lewell-Buck, Labour MP for South Shields, said she would not be among the opposition MPs voting with the government.

There will also be a vote to replace self-isolation with daily tests for double-jabbed contacts of positive cases and a retrospective vote on mandatory mask-wearing in many indoor settings.
