Kielder Observatory and Forestry England have formed a partnership agreement which they say will increase opportunities for more dark-sky tourism within the county's forests.

The current dark-skies industry is already worth about £25m per year to Northumberland, generating about 450 jobs.

Catherine Johns, CEO of Kielder Observatory, said: “Kielder has always been a hub for stargazers and the observatory has become a beacon location for that and has attracted a huge amount of visitors with sell out events consistently.

"The partnership with Forestry England will create a great opportunity to develop more stargazing events in Northumberland which will mean more visitors and more jobs.”

Staff at Forestry England recently helped clear the track to Kielder after a number of trees blocked entry to the site when they were felled by Storm Arwen.

Sunderland's cultural quarter officially opens for business later with an extension to the Fire Station arts complex.

Although the building opened in 2017 with dance studios and a cafe and bar, Friday marks the opening of an auditorium which can hold 550 seated or 800 standing customers.

More than 40 artists and performers, including The Futureheads, Smoove and Turrell and The Fisherman's Friends, are already booked for the opening programme which runs until next summer.

The venue also promises to provide a platform for local and emerging artists "to shine".

Director Tamsin Austin said: "I very much want the programme here to reflect the tastes of the city, the people on the doorstep who want to come for a great night out and good entertainment but also to put Sunderland on the map for national and international touring."

A couple in their 70s were injured when they were hit by a car whose driver failed to stop.

A 71-year-old woman suffered a broken ankle and a 74-year-old man leg injuries after they were struck in the car park of Owton Lodge, on Seaton Lane, Hartlepool, at about 18:00 yesterday.

Cleveland Police say they want to trace the driver of a blue Vauxhall Corsa who didn't stop and drove off along the A689.

The couple were taken to North Tees Hospital for treatment.
