Diary 1 - Thursday 5 February 2009

You would not believe how lucky we were to leave London Heathrow on the morning of Wednesday the 6th. The snow that was falling over the UK was causing havoc.

My parents and I had been up all night standing by the side of a busy motorway somwhere near junction 12 (your guess is as good as mine) in the snow, all because our Volvo's windscreen wipers had packed in.

It seems this was a pretty bad time for it to happen given that it was dark and snowy and you sort of need the wipers at a crucial time like it was! Good old Green flag though...They recovered us by 10pm and we wiped the icicles off our noses and got in their warm pick up truck to Heathrow.

The plane, as we'd expected, was delayed for three hours, but we were just thankful it wasn't completely cancelled.

So, we arrived at San Francisco Airport last night at about 6pm, and after claiming our luggage, and sorting out all the hire car details we picked a massive, white vehicle and left the airport to find a motel in Santa Cruz, about a two hour drive from San Fran.听

The motel room was pretty good for 10 bucks a night so we all gave into jet-lag and went bedwards.

It wasn't long though until Gwen had smacked me in the face and woken me up, turned out though it wasn't just one of those accidental sleeping smacks though, there was a drunken person outside shouting general, noisy abuse to anyone in the local area, and she wasn't happy about it.

Surf looks good tomorrow, can't wait to get in the sea!
