Reflecting on a great British Grand Prix
There is no doubt about it, working on just makes your life fly by!
I'm still feeling the physical effects of spending four days stalking up and down the pits and paddock at Silverstone, and I've just received an e-mail from Anne our production Manager entitled 'German GP details'!
It feels like five minutes since we were in the garage with celebrating his title triumph in Brazil last October and, while I still remember the details of that weekend pretty clearly, we're rocketing towards the end of the following season already, with Silverstone pushing us past the 50% mark.
Our plan over the past weekend was not just to cover the race, but to do justice to the 'event'.
The British Grand Prix has become so much more than just another race on the calendar and that's why we headed off into the campsites, chatted to youngsters in the pit lane, and hosted our post-race red button Forum from the clubhouse.
is like nowhere else we visit and we wanted living rooms across the country to feel what we felt.
One of the highlights of the weekend was going with Eddie Jordan to one of the many campsites and spending a couple of hours chatting to the real stars of the Grand Prix - the fans. In reality, Eddie just chatted away to people while criticising my cooking, but it was clear that people appreciated him putting in an appearance.

F1 is full of people who have made lots of money, achieved great success, and enjoyed a wonderful life thanks to racing. But to find someone who has done all that and not lost the connection with the fans is really rare.
Eddie's race team existed to please the fans and I feel EJ now fulfils that role. He wasn't in the slightest bit fazed about heading into a campsite and shooting the breeze with the fans. He's one of them at heart - a racing fan and a racing man.
I thought it was pretty funny when joined us live after the race on Sunday and commented that we don't know how to do a barbecue and next year we should call him... we might just do that!
However, EJ is as mad as he is approachable. On the way to the shoot he thought it would be funny to put his foot on the accelerator of the golf buggy that we were using... as we approached a sharp right-hand bend!
I was on the outside of the buggy and I couldn't prevent my laptop bag (complete with F1 pass, computer, car keys, wallet etc) from falling off the buggy. To make matters worse, EJ kept his foot planted as we powered through a car park in a cloud of dust. Luckily, a kind passer-by collected the bag and returned it to me. Panic over!
It was great to get good driver access after the race, with Button interviewing Barrichello, laughing at our , and so many people joining us live in the paddock after the grand prix.
I remember Louise the production assistant in the gallery saying down my earpiece: "Off air in 50 minutes" after the podium celebrations. And I was thinking: "How on earth will we fill all that time on 91Èȱ¬ One?!" Well what seemed like just a few minutes later we were off air and even managed to fill another 45 minutes on the F1 Forum!
So now, without really chance to pause for breath we head to Hockenheim for the German Grand Prix. Between now and then though I'm heading to the factory to interview team owner about a life in motorsport.
Like many other people, I've been fascinated by Williams's career and his team's achievements as they went from paddock paupers to kings of F1, finding some of the greatest driving talent along the way.
Clearly, Williams's life has been altered and affected hugely since his accident in 1986, which left him paralysed from the neck down. Yet when you meet him you realise that the hunger to win and the burning desire to be the best hasn't wilted in the slightest. I'll send a couple of tweets to let you know how it goes next week but I've been doing plenty of prep and research, including reading .
One other story I'd really like to cover while we are in Germany is the tale of . One of the most gifted drivers to ever grace F1 lost his life at Hockenheim in 1968. I've long been quite fascinated by Clark and actually have a black Lotus badge that the team produced after his death. I think it would be remiss of us not to visit the site and pay our respects at the .
Anyway, I'd better dash. We're having some building work done and my wife Harriet has commissioned me to be the official cameraman of the build. And as one of the supporting walls is about to come crashing down I'd better grab the camera - the only person missing is !

P.S. Talking of Kevin, he was at the last weekend and I was there with Murray Walker (wasn't it great to see him on the forum).
I took Murray for a spin up the famous hill and decided to do a few burn-outs, donuts and generally let the crowd show their love for Murray. Except when I got to the top I got seriously hauled over the coals by the stewards for breaking just about every rule in the book.
Being told off was a little embarrassing, but on the way back down the crowd were on their feet and had clearly loved it. Murray then uttered the classic line: "Annoying the marshals and pleasing the crowd means it was a rather successful drive!" Classic!

I love to learn about the history of F1 and it would be great that when you go to countries like Germany, Belgium, Italy, Spain etc to see features on the track itself, with looks at former versions of existing tracks and former F1 venues in that country, and the races that took place on them. Examples: the old longer Spa, longer Hockenheim, the crazy AVUS circuit, Montjuic Park, Mosport, Rouen, Reims, Clermont-Ferrand (three classic tracks just from one country!). Features on historic drivers would be good too.

A question about Dirty Air:
There is a lot of talk in the commentary about cars not being able to follow close because of the dirty air from the car in front.
Why don't teams/car designers come up with the aerodynamics that will increase downforce when in the dirty air. Thus the cars can get closer and possibly overtake. Or would this have the opposite effect when the car is in clean air ?

As I turned off the red button and looked at the clock, I realised that I'd just watched 4 and half hours of fanatic coverage and how the time flew by!
Yourself and the rest of your team are just coming together so nicely now it's such a pleasure to watch race weekend.

Silverstone organised this year's race better than ever. The last time I attended was 2006 and this was good but no where near as good as this year's race.

As a side note, I was intrigued by your comment that Sir Frank Williams is paralysed from the neck down, as I thought I had clear memories of seeing him moving his hands at times whilst talking, and wheeling his chair manually.
Some research suggests he's actually paralysed from the chest down and does have use, albeit limited, of his hands and arms.
Anyway, I hope to see his teams resurgence continue, it would be great to see Williams once again challenging for world titles as per the glory days I remember whilst growing up!

Must admit when i heard f1 was going to the bbc i didnt like the sound of that after so long on itv wow how wrong was i. I loved the whole coverage and knew some people who where staying in the campsite so was also raking the crowds trying to see someone I knew!! I loved seeing Murray back on form both in the run up and on the forum. He is such a natural and has the most fantastic knowledge!
I was so excited about the race too.. so much palavar and silly politics but in the end a blazing good race in my humble opinion. I have a group of mates that all text during the race and I busted over 120 and had some serious screaming phone calls at poinent moments. (the opening laps where fabulous drama).
Again, high fives and back slaps to all involved. I am loving this season and it looks like its gonna be so very exciting with the races to come.

Is it possible to twist the arm of the BBc to include the design of the drivers helmet at the side of there face and name when you show the line up for the grid
I was present at Silverstone this year and it was awesome
I know most of the drivers helmet designs, but not all of them
it would make life much easier

Watching practice yesterday and seeing the water drain off the land surrounding the track, and the mayhem it caused, I want to ask this:
Why don't circuits in wet countries, have those hidden drains with the drainage 'slots' at the side of the track. This would help prevent water getting onto the track and speed drying. Racing in the rain is something that sets F1 skills apart from Indy NASCAR etc. But the odd really wet area on track can really cause insurmountable problems...

Question for the tech team: When a car is damaged (eg Adrian Sutil) in qualifying and has to be rebuilt overnight, what technologies are used to establish that the parts that are going to be used from the damaged vehicle are all clear for use? Is any imaging technology used to show that the part is undamaged, straight, and not fatigued in any way?

Whilst not about the money, sanction of a heavy fine....ie the $50,000,000 Mclaren got fined for spygate would act as a deterrent to a greater degree. So here is what I think could resolve this.
The stuarts should be given the power to request clarification of any comms which in their opinion is likely to result in a position swap between team mates. This should happen within two laps including the response.
If the clarification is not within the strict understanding of the rule then BOTH cars
get a stop go penalty which must result in the reversing of the swap.
There should be a two strike per team and you are out for a race over the course of season.
By placing equal responsibility on both drivers contractual agreement will become very difficult to keep not least because the manufacture will also loose valuable points and this affects the large sponsors who may be putting pressure on teams.
In the event that in the last race of the season it is mathematically possible for a team mate to win the championship by a position being gifted to them by the team mate then it should be down to the drivers to let the stuarts know prior to the race start
The FIA could also take additional action after the race.

question...How could F1 Constructors be encouraged to focus on their own championship whilst simultaneously be kept from interfering with the Drivers Championship?
Why not remove points from the Drivers championship!! The constructors championship could have their points doubled. Drivers championships could then be won on three criteria...Firstly WINS...i know i know..but what if more than one driver have a similar numbers of wins?? Well, should one of those drivers be the reigning world champ, he should retain his title as no other driver has succeeded in beating him! If not, then a second criteria should come into play....PODIUMS ie coupled with wins how many times has each driver had a podium finish. Should, after that, there is still more than one driver on level pegging...then a third criteria..CONSTRUCTOR POINTS SCORED!
A championship based on something like this would,in my opinion, encourage the drivers to race for wins instead of settling for points at each and every race.
By doubling constructor points could allow teams to ensure supplying their drivers with equal equipment, to enable them to compete for those wins without too much undue politics and favouritism. Although teams would still aim for one/two finishes but after all, with that many points up for grabs, would they really care which of their driver wins as long as it was one of them??
