The importance of Lindisfarne for the Vikings
Description
Lindisfarne, also known as Holy Island, was one of the first landing sites of the Vikings. Monasteries were places where monks lived and worshipped. Most people respected the monks and gave them money and gifts for their monasteries; however, the Vikings committed terrible violence against the Monks at Lindisfarne.
Classroom Ideas
Students could be given the opportunity to compare two different groups from Viking times. Ask students to fold a piece of paper in half, and draw a Viking and a Lindisfarne inhabitant or monk on each side. Speech bubbles could be added, describing each person鈥檚 thoughts and opinions at the time when the Vikings attacked Lindisfarne. Students could discuss the differences and similarities between these two people.
