Viking clothing
Description
A description of the sort of clothes the Vikings wore. They were handmade out of materials available at the time such as, wool, linen, leather and silk. Clothes had to be practical to keep people warm and dry, and to enable them to do their work. Wealthy Vikings wore fine clothes and expensive jewellery to show how rich and powerful they were.
Classroom Ideas
Students could be given drawings of items of clothing, some of which the Vikings would have worn and some more modern items which they would not. Students could cut out each of these items of clothing and use them to dress a Viking man or woman outlined on paper. Students could label their Vikings, describing the item of clothing. What materials is it made of? Does it serve a purpose or was the item purely fashionable?
Students could use their knowledge of Viking dress to create their own life-size Vikings by drawing around a class member on a large piece of paper, and then dressing the outline with appropriate Viking clothing.
