Why was trench warfare introduced in WW1?
Description
Historian Dan Snow helps Michael Douglas understand why trench warfare was so important in WW1. As Michael tries to cross a field, he realises how clear a target he is and how important it is to be beyond the line of fire. He also learns that there was little protection from the cover of darkness as the battlefield could be illuminated with flares.
Classroom Ideas
Would be helpful in understanding why trench warfare was employed in WW1. Could be used to prompt discussion and further research about the realities of such warfare and the impact it had, physically and mentally, on the soldiers concerned.
