Historian Dan Snow explains to Michael Douglas how the near stalemate of trench warfare in WW1 was relieved by the introduction of tanks, aircraft and shells. We see how protection was provided and a path was cleared for foot soldiers, as the tanks rolled forward through barbed wire and most other obstacles.

Could be used as an introduction to how tanks came to be part of every army鈥檚 essential equipment. In understanding how tanks made a difference in WW1, pupils could consider the benefits and drawbacks of using a tank in battle.
