A guide to character in 'The Cone Gatherers'
Description
The presenter defines each of the central characters in 鈥楾he Cone Gatherers鈥 by Robin Jenkins. Calum is described as symbolising good. His innocence and love of nature are exemplified in the pivotal scene where Calum mourns the injury of a wounded deer. Neil hates the social class system which is furthered in a dramatised scene where he and Calum are expelled from the beech hut by Lady Runcie Campbell. Duror represents a contrasting evil to Calum鈥檚 goodness. He reveals how outward respectability can belie inward corruption. Lady Runcie Campbell is portrayed as a divided character, torn between her religious belief in equality and her cultural understanding of the class structure. Roderick lives in an imaginary world, but he is able to see others for who they are. He symbolises the good in man before cultural dictates influence us.
